Job Summary

This position exists to further the objectives of the Department of Neurological Surgery Brain Tumor Center Preclinical Core, a unique facility at UCSF that is focused on the basic and translational science of brain tumors, and to further the objectives of the Raleigh lab, an independent lab focused on the genomic, biochemical, and cellular drivers of tumor heterogeneity and evolution. In brief, the purposes of this position are to (1) execute preclinical experiments using mouse models for the Brain Tumor Center Preclinical Core, and to (2) assist in the execution of basic and translational science experiments using mouse models for the Raleigh lab, including genetic, allograft, and xenograft models.

The Preclinical Core has a long track record of innovative, translational research of brain tumor biology, and The SRA 4 will facilitate the biologic aims of prospective preclinical trials to identify and deliver novel molecular therapeutics to brain tumor models. Expertise with mouse models, mouse surgery, and sample collection from mice is required. The ability to learn new surgical and experimental techniques is required. Projects will center around modeling human brain tumors in vivo to facilitate the identification and characterization of patient-specific targets for molecular therapy. The candidate is expected to work in a collaborative setting with the other members of the Preclinical Core staff and the Raleigh lab, as well as other members of the brain tumor center, including neuro-oncologists, radiation oncologists, neuro-pathologists, and neurosurgeons.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $33.98 - $54.67 (Hourly Rate).

Department Description

The Department of Neurosurgery at UCSF is one of the most pre-emanate neurosurgical departments in the country for clinical care, training and research. The department is number one academic research publication productivity and recently named as one of the top Neurosurgery Training Programs in the country. The Department is also ranked 4th in the nation for Neurosurgery & Neurology and is the number one Neurosurgery Department on the west coast (US News & World Report). Central administration at the Parnassus Heights location is responsible for directing all administrative functions of the department. The department's Spine Group Team is currently located at UCSF Parnassus Campus.

Required Qualifications


  • BA/BS in a related science and 3+ years directly related work experience; and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Controlled substances, chemical, carcinogen handling training
  • Rodent handling training
  • Administer agents via oral gavage, tail vein injection, subcutaneous injection and intraperitoneal injection
  • Knowledge of rodent anatomy
  • Knowledge of handling of controlled substances
  • Knowledge of neurological symptoms for intracranial tumor-bearing animals

Preferred Qualifications


  • Rodent intracranial surgery experience
  • Cell culture training
  • Small animal radiation research platform training
  • Irradiator use of certification and FBI background clearance
  • Bioluminescence image machine operation
  • Perform rodent intracranial surgery including Convection-enhanced delivery
  • Knowledge of radiotherapy administration to rodent
  • Set up & deliver radiotherapy treatment via an Irradiator machine

License/Certification
