The NC State Veterinary Hospital (VH), established in 1983, is one of the highest rated veterinary academic medical centers in the country, serving communities throughout North Carolina as well as many other states. The hospital staffs over twenty clinical services with board certified specialists that are nationally and even internationally renowned, ensuring the VH is on the cutting edge of veterinary medicine. Patients benefit from the combined expertise of multiple specialists utilizing a team approach to patient health care. Each year, nearly 35,000 patients are treated in the VH. The VH provides compassionate care, state of the art specialty health care, expert clinical instruction for 4th year veterinary students from College of Veterinary Medicine, and ongoing investigation of innovative techniques and procedures to further advance the field of veterinary medicine.
Essential Job Duties
This position supervises a team of staff that provides support for patients requiring advanced surgical intervention in both the Randall B. Terry Jr. Companion Animal Medical Center and the Equine and Farm Animal Veterinary Center. The team is composed of Veterinary Technicians, Veterinary Assistants, and Sterile Processing Technicians, all uniquely trained in sterile techniques for an array of small and large animal elective and non-elective procedures.

A person in this department must possess advanced knowledge of veterinary medicine in both small and large animals, and a strong desire to work with a team, providing guidance and leadership in a fast paced environment.

Management responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Ensuring that all patients in the centers will receive high quality care by collaborating with direct reports and specialty services & anesthesia providers to ensure the daily schedule runs smoothly
  • Overseeing the daily operations of the surgical and sterile services.
  • Actively managing teams with frequent and direct communication on day-to-day responsibilities and workflow related to case assignment, room selection, room preparedness, and procedural times
  • Participating in recruitment, candidate selection, and hiring process
  • Conducting performance management; ensuring human resources policies and related information are shared with employees; resolution of disciplinary and grievance issues
  • Scheduling management including PTO requests, timesheets, on call, and holidays for staff
  • Scheduling management for 1st-3rd year employed DVM students
  • Delivering and overseeing training for all new employees & students, including prep, scrub, equipment, and procedures through training manuals, SOP, and other educational platforms
  • Providing continuing education, staff meetings, and other staff resource and development opportunities
  • Evaluating and modifying protocols to ensure excellent patient care and that hospital standards are current


Direct patient care duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Preparing surgical suite with appropriate physical setup according to procedure, including sterility validation, table location/positioning, equipment check, and surgical pack & supply acquisition
  • Preparing patients for surgical procedures through standard aseptic clip, prep, scrub and draping techniques
  • Maintaining a sterile surgical environment and providing assistance during surgical procedures
  • Breaking down surgical suite while adhering to cleaning and disinfecting policies
  • Maintaining surgical equipment including; sterile surgical instruments, cautery, surgical lights, mayo stand, IWI, drills, microscope, portable C-ARM, and heating devices
  • Assisting in cleaning and sterilizing surgical instruments and equipment
  • Supporting various surgical services for SA & LA including Neurology, Soft Tissue, Orthopedic, Ophthalmology, and Cardiology
  • Performing drug calculations for intra-op medication administration

The position provides essential patient, departmental and hospital coordination of workflow, information and teaching with duties to include, but are not limited to:

  • Acting as the primary laser safety officer for all 3 medical hospitals. Providing all annual and biannual training to onboarding staff, house officers and faculty. Monitoring use of all laser classified devices and maintains all laser safety certifications/standards and inspections.
  • General oversight of surgical and sterile equipment maintenance, repair and purchases
  • Partnering with surgical constituents internally to ensure regular evaluation of equipment including additional supplies, backup items, lifespan of instruments, and replacements
  • Creating relationships with vendors and repair companies for all surgical equipment including tables, lights, instruments
  • Overseeing all record documentation with a variety of data relating to surgical records/logs, surgical instrumentation and patient care with use of hospital information systems.
  • Orientation, teaching, and coaching new staff, students, interns and residents in related policies, procedures, and patient care
  • Ensuring department and staff are following hospital standards, infectious disease and hospital policies, along with OSHA, EHS and radiation safety policies and trainings
  • Overseeing logs associated with OSHA regulated equipment including surgical equipment, eye wash & shower stations and autoclaves
  • Preparing department and staff for an array of inspections
  • Collaborating with infectious disease committee and laboratory director to manage infectious disease guidelines, policies and nosocomial culture program

Qualifications


Minimum Experience/Education
Bachelor's degree and two years of general research experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Other Required Qualifications

  • Previous experience in a canine / feline veterinary setting.
  • Previous supervisory experience
  • Previous experience with equine and farm animal patients
  • Ability to work with or around sick animals, potentially hazardous materials, cleaning chemicals, gas anesthetics, zoonotic diseases, and unpleasant odors.
  • Ability to communicate professionally and effectively at all times and maintain professionalism in emotionally charged / challenging situations.
  • Ability to provide high quality customer service.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work beyond scheduled work hours when needed.
  • Ability to work effectively as a member of a team and be an active participant in problem solving and team advancement.
  • Ability to work effectively with computers and electronics.
  • Ability to work independently and practice good judgment to ensure high quality care for all patients and request assistance when needed.
  • Desire to teach 4th year veterinary students

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience as a veterinary technician in a clinical setting; preferably at a teaching hospital.


Required License or Certification

  • Licensed/Registered/Certified by any state
  • Graduation from an AVMA fully accredited two- or four-year Veterinary Technician program
