The University of North Carolina at Charlotte incites applications from and nominations of tenured faculty members for the position of Chair of the Department of Anthropology. This twelve-month, senior-level appointment begins July 1, 2025. Salary is competitive. The Department of Anthropology offers a general and an applied track for an MA Degree in Anthropology, a dual Degree MA/MPH in Anthropology and Public Health, an undergraduate major with general and applied concentration, and a minor. Successful candidates will demonstrate capability in fulfilling the responsibilities of the Chair as outlined in the Department of Anthropology bylaws.

Primary Purpose of Department
The Anthropology Department at UNC Charlotte is dedicated to a comprehensive approach for understanding human biological and cultural commonalities and differences across time and space. Our department is committed to using anthropology to understand our human species and help solve contemporary problems to make life better for humans in many different locales. We emphasize the applicability of anthropological theories and methods for non-academic settings like non-profit organizations, businesses, and government, and our students have the option to focus on applied anthropology for their BA or MA degrees in anthropology. There are several faculty who work on research projects in both archaeology and sociocultural anthropology in the Charlotte area. Students within the department are encouraged to work with faculty on community-based projects, service-learning experiences, and field schools. Applied Anthropology majors participate in internships with local organizations such as the local area food bank.

The College of Humanities & Earth and Social Sciences focuses on student-centered teaching, innovative research and community collaborations that prepare our graduates to help solve the pressing problems of our world today. Description of Work

Responsible for the daily operation of the department and the department programs. The Department Chair/ Director will promote excellence in department programs within the University. Chair/ Director responsibilities are classified as professional duties requiring leadership and mentoring of faculty, administrative expertise to include vision, long term and short-term planning, decision-making and coordination of instruction.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Required Qualifications: Tenured rank at UNC Charlotte; a PhD in Anthropology or related field from an accredited institution; an exemplary record of publication, teaching, and service in the field of anthropology, appropriate to rank; and capability of strong leadership in undergraduate/graduate education and in research, including the ability to facilitate faculty efforts at seeking external grant support. The candidate should also demonstrate a commitment to the engagement and success of the Department's students, staff, and faculty.
Minimum Experience/Education

UNC Charlotte gives primary consideration to the earned doctorate or terminal degree in the teaching discipline or a related discipline.

Desired Qualifications: Previous administrative experience; the ability to work with interdisciplinary programs and centers; potential as a strong advocate for the department at the College and University levels; experience mentoring faculty and graduate students; and a commitment to advancing the University's outreach mission.
