Position Highlights |
The Department of Environmental Science at the University of Arizona is seeking a Postdoctoral Social Scientist to contribute to two projects related to use of scientific information by natural resource and wildland fire managers in the US Southwest. The incumbent will be part of the Climate Assessment for the Southwest (CLIMAS) program (www.climas.arizona.edu), which is a inter- and transdisciplinary group who carry out place-based, solutions-oriented climate research. The position entails working in a small transdisciplinary research team to: 1) understand the characteristics of the information use environments and professional cultures of Southwest fire management that enable and inhibit use of scientific data/information by fire managers, 2) assess how specific weather/climate data and information is used by Southwest natural resource managers, 3) help inform development of science-based data/information tools and products (i.e., climate services) that will support natural resource management decision making. This position will provide an outstanding opportunity for a post-doctoral scholar to contribute their social science skills and expertise to a highly collaborative research group. This is a year-to-year appointment, contingent upon funding and performance. Duties & Responsibilities |
- Design and lead qualitative social science data collection and analysis efforts.
- Develop and maintain professional relationships with partners who both contribute to and benefit from project research.
- Collaboratively develop project outputs that include peer-reviewed publications, funder reports, and practitioner-focused reports.
- Review literature from multiple fields to identify prior work relevant to project objectives.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Basic knowledge of natural resource management practices in the US West.
- Ability to carry out a qualitative social research project from design through publication.
- Skill working directly with experts outside of your discipline or domain of expertise.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
- Ability to distill and synthesize information from multiple disciplines.
- Demonstrated ability to produce peer-reviewed publications.
- Excellent skills writing in English for both academic and broader audiences.
- Interpersonal skills suitable for succeeding in inter-and transdisciplinary research environments.
- Candidates should demonstrate potential for or evidence of an ability to work successfully in an inter- or transdisciplinary research environment.

Minimum Qualifications |
- A PhD in a relevant social science discipline (e.g., geography, anthropology, sociology, environmental studies) must be completed prior to starting the position.
