Brief Summary of Work for this Position
Student Success Advisors will advise students on various university and program resources, time management resources, and program benchmarks. With a campus mandatory advising model, Student Success Advisors work consistently with their assigned advisees, but also with prospective and continuing undergraduate and graduate students.

Student Success Advisors rely heavily on significant use of communication via phone, videoconference, email, and other forms of communication. Student Success Advisors are self-starters, quick learners and are motivated by working in a collaborative environment.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

  • Master's degree in a related field.
  • Experience with various advising and software applications, learning platforms, and technology-based delivery systems, including Microsoft Office Suite as well as knowledge in enterprise platforms (Banner, Starfish, Degree Works, Web Now, etc.).
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to attend to details with a high degree of accuracy.


Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills & Experience

  • Experience in an academic advising setting in a university environment. Preference for work experience related to administering services and programs related to supporting varied student populations, program assessment and evaluation, and retention initiatives.
  • Possess a proven track record for effective advising, coaching, and communication skills within a diverse student population as part of a team.
  • Knowledgeable of best practices and theoretical foundations in the fields of adult learning, student development, counseling, supplemental instruction, advising, and student services.
  • Knowledge of relevant federal, state, and local laws, university regulations, and programs/policies required for compliance.
  • Experience with and commitment to working with students from diverse backgrounds (e.g. first-year, continuing, and transfer students; pre-professional students; adult learners, military students, on-campus and on-line students, students from historically underrepresented populations) and knowledge of issues of these student populations.
  • Preference for work experience related to administering services and programs related to supporting varied student populations, program assessment and evaluation, and retention initiatives.
  • Demonstrated professionalism in effective judgment and professional integrity.
  • Demonstrated commitment to and execution of high-level customer service.

Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The Student Success Center in the College of Health and Human Services ( CHHS) at the University of North Carolina Wilmington ( UNCW) works to develop and provide programs and services for students, staff, and faculty that foster excellence in the student experience at UNCW and position students for success as they continue in their chosen career paths. The center houses caring individuals who are passionate about and dedicated to helping students identify and achieve their educational and career goals.

The Student Success Center works collaboratively with other units across campus (e.g., the Career Center, University College, etc.) to achieve the following:

  • Provide academic advising
  • Resource development
  • Student success programming initiatives
  • Support program recruitment and admissions
  • Provide major, career, and graduate school guidance
  • Support internship, clinical, and field placement for students
  • Perform assessment, monitoring, and reporting related to these services
  • Develop other services and programs that will foster student and alumni success


The Student Success Center acts as an "accelerator network" for these services and programs across the College, and thus should have the ability to be flexible in a changing, fast-paced environment.
College/School Information
The College of Health and Human Services was created in July 2010 to provide UNCW with a new mechanism to link and focus its health-related research, professional continuing education, and health knowledge dissemination and application. In the formative stage of development, the CHHS is currently home to three professional schools: School of Health and Applied Human Sciences, School of Nursing, and School of Social Work. The College seeks to be nationally recognized for its inter-professional and collaborative approach to enhancing the health and quality of life of individuals, families, and communities in southeastern North Carolina and beyond.
