Grade: T28 As a key role within the rapidly growing research and commercialization ecosystem at Temple University, the Associate Director of Licensing will serve as the primary deal maker, responsible for leading all licensing activities related to the University's intellectual property (IP). Reporting to the Director of Commercialization Operations under the Office of the Vice President for Research, this role will focus on generating leads, negotiating agreements, and finalizing deals, ensuring that University-developed technologies are successfully commercialized. The Associate Director will also oversee post-licensing administration, including financial and IP management, while collaborating with innovation managers to align licensing strategies with market demands. Essential Functions: Licensing and Deal-Making: Lead the full lifecycle of IP licensing, from generating leads to negotiating terms and finalizing agreements for options and licensing. Act as the primary point of contact for companies interested in licensing University technologies, facilitating deal negotiations in collaboration with inventors, University counsel, and other stakeholders. Research and draft initial licensing terms, adjusting based on input from internal stakeholders and market insights. Manage relationships with licensees, ensuring that terms align with the University's goals and compliance is maintained. Negotiate and finalize IP agreements such as option, licensing, material transfer, confidentiality, partnership agreements, SRAs and IIAs. Marketing and Lead Generation: Collaborate with innovation managers to develop marketing materials and strategies for promising innovations and intellectual property in the University's portfolio. Develop and implement strategies to educate the internal stakeholders such as inventors as well as potential entrepreneurs and licensees on the licensing process. Identify potential commercial partners and conduct outreach to potential licensees, leveraging industry contacts and attending relevant events to promote University technologies. Work closely with internal stakeholders to refine marketing materials and present University innovations to prospective partners. Post-Licensing Administration: Oversee the management of licensing agreements post-execution, ensuring all deliverables, financials, and IP-related obligations are fulfilled. Track and report on the performance of active licenses, addressing any compliance or amendment needs. Collaborate with innovation managers to ensure IP management is aligned with ongoing commercialization efforts. Team Leadership and Expansion: As the lead licensing officer, contribute to the development of the licensing team, ensuring scalability as the research enterprise grows. Required Education & Experience: Required Skills & Abilities: * Excellent communication, negotiation, and relationship-building abilities, with a deep understanding of the intersection between technology and market needs. * Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to assess technologies and guide deal-making. * Proven ability to manage multiple projects and drive them to successful completion. * Ability to lead cross-functional teams and interact effectively with diverse internal and external stakeholders. * Demonstrated success in leading negotiations and closing complex licensing deals. * Strong knowledge of IP law, commercialization processes, and market trends relevant to the University's innovations. Preferred * PhD, MBA or JD with significant experience in negotiating high-value IP agreements. * Prior experience managing post-licensing activities, including financial compliance and IP portfolio management. This position requires a background check.
