JOB SUMMARY

The Nurse Clinician is a professional care provider with above average clinical skills, competence, and organizational proficiency in order to direct patient care in the Intraoperative Environment. The Nurse Clinician develops a broad clinical and operational knowledge base and works in collaboration with the Physician groups providing care to the Surgical Patient. Serves as a liaison between Nursing Management and staff in the efficient and effective utilization of the Operating Room (OR). Assists in developing/implementing departmental protocols for scheduling of the surgical patient. The Nurse Clinician assists in the planning, organizing and monitor orientation of new personnel in the Intraoperative Environment.

Typical Duties



  • Demonstrates competency in delivery of patient care through the effective utilization of the Operating Room
  • Facilitates the daily operation of the Operating Room schedule
  • Communicates and collaborates with the Surgical Scheduling Office
  • Communicates and collaborates with the Daily Anesthesia Board Runner
  • Rounds in the OR to assist in patient throughout and trouble shoot problems and issues
  • Proactively communicates any changes to the room schedule with Anesthesia, Surgeon and Nursing staff involved
  • Communicates and collaborates any Add-ons with Urgent or Emergent status
  • Adjusts staff and schedule to facilitate the optimal care for urgent and Emergent cases
  • Utilizes electronic tracking boards to maximize patient throughput
  • Monitors efficient operating room turnover
  • Communicates with interdepartmental personnel to facilitate efficient patient throughout the Operating Room
  • Collaborates with Nursing Management in effective use of Service Leads Assignments
  • Collaborates with Service Leads on coordination of care for specific patient populations
  • Monitors staff adherence to protocols and procedures
  • Provides feedback to Perioperative Services Leadership for annual staff competencies and education
  • Maintains a safe environment for staff, patients, physicians and visitors
  • Verifies physician and ancillary personnel credentialing when in question
  • Investigates patient care problems and complaints and promptly seeks solutions collaborating with the Medical Staff and/or the nursing staff as indicated
  • Participates in the Multidisciplinary conferences held in the department
  • Identifies topics for ongoing discussion and education
  • Plans, organizes, and monitors the orientation of new staff
  • Provides feedback on new hires for past experience, education/knowledge and plans during orientation that is specific to the needs of the employee
  • Monitors the progress of orientee doing problem solving as needed
  • Under the direction of Perioperative Services Leadership, assists with unit-based Quality Improvement (QI) Program and initiatives
  • Participates in Q.I. meetings to discuss on-going issues and strategies for corrective action
  • Coordinates the Department Program assisting staff members and others in the collection of data, reporting results to Perioperative Services Leadership and writing reports as required
  • Ensures monitoring of regulatory requirements and reports as identified by department
  • Attends all mandatory In-Services and attends at least one (1) educational seminar or workshop annually which pertains to Operating Room efficiency
  • Acts as resource person for members of the health care team to provide effective and safe patient care
  • Maintains clinical competency as a Perioperative registered nurse by performing direct patient care activities (scrubbing/circulating) a minimum of two shifts per month.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications



  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing from an accredited college or university is required. (Must provide official transcripts at time of interview)
  • Licensed as a Registered Professional Nurse in the State of Illinois is required
  • Five (5) years of nursing experience in a hospital as a staff nurse is required
  • Three (3) years of experience in Operating Room Nursing is required
  • Current Certified Perioperative Nurse (CNOR) Certification is required (If already obtained, must provide proof at time of interview)
  • Current Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) Certification is required (If already obtained, must provide proof at time of interview)
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification is required (If already obtained, must provide proof at time of interview)
