Job Summary

The Storage and Backup Engineer occupies a critical position within the Data Center Services team in Platform Services, reporting directly to the Lead Storage and Backup Administrator. The Engineer will engage in the planning, design, and implementation of storage solutions that meet UCSF's requirements, while also developing and executing backup strategies and policies to ensure data integrity and availability during restoration processes.

The Engineer will work closely with the Lead Storage and Backup Administrator to manage the provisioning, monitoring, upgrading, and capacity planning for the storage environment, ensuring compliance with data security regulations and UCSF's internal policies. The Engineer will provide technical expertise and guidance for day-to-day operations to ensure optimized performance and assist in the implementation of storage and backup policies and solutions aligned with the broader Platform Services goals.

The Storage and Backup Engineer will positively impact UCSF's operations and culture by ensuring UCSF's IT infrastructure is operable, secure, efficient, and effective in service of the University's mission. The Storage and Backup Engineer will advance the University's mission by delivering exceptional information technology services comprehensively and consistently across customers and stakeholders. This role will execute UCSF's vision while modeling UCSF's culture and values.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

our placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $132,400 - $198,600 (Annual Rate).

The Platform Services team within Infrastructure Services is committed to empowering the academic, medical, and research mission of UCSF by ensuring that all customers have seamless, secure, and accessible technological support. The team oversees the management and maintenance of various technology platforms, including system and cloud services, to guarantee they are secure, readily available, and performing optimally. Platform Services handles the management of critical software, such as Epic, ensuring it supports the highest level of medical service delivery by operating at peak performance. The team also oversees data center operations, including server management, storage, and networking equipment, to ensure the reliable delivery of health services. Additionally, it manages databases with a focus on data security, availability, and top-tier performance. All these tasks are critical not just for the smooth operation of the University's technological infrastructure, but also for enhancing productivity, enabling the provision of high-quality health services and learning, and ultimately, improving patient and student outcomes.

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree, or equivalent combination of experience/training, in one or more of the following fields: computer science, engineering, computer information systems, etc.
    5+ years of Experience in one or more of the following fields: storage administration, information technology, data center services, etc.
  • Demonstrated experience in information technology, platform services, or storage and backup administration.
  • Demonstrated experience with backup software and solutions (e.g., Veritas NetBackup, Commvault).
  • Advanced knowledge of how to apply technologies and systems to meet business needs. Extensive experience provisioning, migrating, and utilizing cloud storage. Extensive experience planning for future storage needs across a business application community in a collaborative way.
  • Extensive experience troubleshooting across the entire storage path from the host to the SAN/NAS, Block and Cloud storage devices and across complex network topologies. In-depth knowledge of operating systems.
  • Proven experience publishing performance reports and recommending enhancements or modifications to the environment to meet future storage needs.
  • In-depth understanding of system performance monitoring and actions that can be taken to improve or correct performance.
  • Skills associated with adapting equipment and technology to serve users' needs. Demonstrated comprehensive understanding of how system management actions affect other systems, system users, and dependent/related functions.
  • Advanced knowledge, skills, and abilities associated with system problem identification and resolution. Experience with design, configuration, operation, repair, and tuning of technology systems.
  • Advanced knowledge of computer security best practices and policies including demonstrated experience securing most complex server-based software.
  • Advanced written and verbal communication skills and ability to communicate technical information and ideas to diverse community of colleagues and stakeholders.
  • Expert ability to establish and advance positive working relationships and a strong rapport with team members, stakeholders, and customers.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to balance competing priorities and support concurrent projects. Experience working in a project-based environment using leading project management practices including schedule management, status reporting, and communication of project risks and issues. Familiarity with budget planning and management, business case development, and service management.
  • Strong demonstrated problem-solving skills; scopes solutions based on knowledge of available resources and timelines. Able to ask questions, gather information, evaluate options, and make decisions with integrity.
  • Demonstrated experience participating in activities to advance an inclusive environment that values equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging.
  • Ability to think creatively and propose innovative ideas, including the incorporation of new technologies or processes.
  • Ability to work with agility in a fast-paced environment.

Preferred Qualifications


  • CompTIA Storage+ or equivalent
  • SNIA Certified Storage Professional (SCSP) or equivalent
