Overview

The Genomics, Ethics, and Translational Research Program within RTI International conducts translational genetics and genomics research with a focus on rare diseases in newborns, young children, and adults. Our work aims to translate basic science discoveries into clinical and public health practice. Program scientists plan and implement research studies, conduct evaluations, and provide technical assistance to a variety of clients. The Program consists of approximately 20 early-career to mid- and senior-level staff and resides within the GenOmics and Translational Research Center and the Analytics Practice Area, which includes experts in discovery genomics, informatics, biostatistics, and data science.

We are seeking a Program Lead/ Senior Genetics Researcher who will oversee operations and establish, plan, and administer goals for the Program in alignment with the Center and Practice Area. In addition, this role entails winning, leading, and/or managing highly complex projects. We require candidates who have a proven track record and expertise in translational genetics or genomics.


Responsibilities

  • Provides operational oversight of the Program ensuring sufficient resources and needed skill sets are present to meet the needs of RTI.
  • Monitors staff and organizational contributions to financial targets and other defined objectives; develops and implements action plans to address any gaps.
  • Plays a leadership role in committees or initiatives around operational and management issues (i.e. labor planning).
  • Manages staff through performance planning, development, and evaluation processes.
  • Ensures staff development and career progression.
  • Develops and/or implements practices to ensure/drive towards a high level of staff morale and retention.
  • Guides promotion and succession processes.
  • Guides recruitment and hiring of new staff, including conducting and leading interviews.
  • Plans and convenes regular Program meetings.
  • Is an active contributor to the Center and broader organization's management team and attends regular management meetings.
  • Wins, leads, and manages highly complex health research projects.
  • Performs research tasks of significant technical complexity, developing and implementing innovative and creative technical solutions to research problems, questions, and issues.
  • Prepares project budgets, defines costing plans, and monitors project costs.
  • Plans/directs the preparation of proposals of significant technical complexity, contract value, or strategic importance.
  • Develops and expands RTI reputation as "resident expert" (e.g., frequently authoring articles published in peer-reviewed journals, making presentations to internal/external clients and at professional meetings, etc.).
  • Builds work in research practice area.
  • Leads and/or supports the strategic development of the Program, staying abreast of and leveraging new methodologies to advance the business.
  • Contributes across the organization in working with senior management on broad strategic and operational initiatives.
  • Serves as a peer reviewer, proposal reviewer, and mentor to staff.

Qualifications

  • PhD and 10 years of experience or Master's degree and 14 years of experience.
  • Successful record of leading and/or playing a major role in obtaining competitive funding
  • Demonstrated history of scientific stature activities.
  • Experience leading highly complex projects with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Excellent project and proposal management skills and engagement with clients.
  • Highly skilled in budget management, reporting systems, cost estimating, and evaluation of cost drivers.
  • Experience mentoring and supervising leaders.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to multi-task.
  • Ability to work well with others and independently.
