Summary of Job Duties:The individual will work in field and laboratory research in close association with researchers at Arkansas State University, Jonesboro (ASU) and the USDA-ARS Delta Water Management Research Unit (DWMRU) located at ASU, as well as under the direction of administration or academic faculty. The project primarily focuses on field and laboratory research studies on improved crop management practices that can sustain yields and protect the environment in the Lower Mississippi River Delta. Studies are on-farm trials and laboratory research that seek to understand the impacts of innovative agricultural irrigation and cropping systems and technologies in the Arkansas Delta with a focus on quantification of greenhouse gas emissions. The research includes management of large agricultural datasets from field measurements of climate-smart cropping practices in irrigated row crops. Findings from this research will sustain and help make crop production in the Mid-South more resilient to fluctuations in climate and irrigation water availability.
The successful candidate will be responsible performing laboratory, greenhouse, and field collection of soil, water, gas and plant data in the assessment of smart-climate management practices in irrigated row crop production from agricultural production. Duties to include but not limited to: field collection of greenhouse gas samples from field research sites in commercial agricultural fields in eastern Arkansas, performance of initial lab processing of samples at ASU. Job duties will include maintenance of field and lab research equipment including recording and updating documentation of field and laboratory procedures and modifications. Candidate will follow standard chemical and physical guidelines that employ best laboratory practices and appropriate safety procedures. Data management responsibilities will include data collection and management, as well as preliminary statistical analysis. Job duties will include 1) writing computer programs to automate the calculation of greenhouse gas flux from agricultural fields and 2) developing and maintaining greenhouse gas emission databases from row crops.
The candidate must be proficient with computer software for data management, analysis and presentations. The individual will prepare technical reports and present results at lab meetings and supervisor-approved scientific conferences. The individual is expected to work with the UADA and and/or Division mission activities
This position requires a B.S. with a concentration in agricultural engineering, computer sciences, environmental sciences, or closely related field required with at least 1.5 years of relevant professional experience, OR a Master's degree or higher in a related field.
Candidate must have valid Driver's license and be able to operate trucks pulling trailers, and lift 50 lb. water bottles, and operate 4-wheelers (side-by-side field vehicles) in agricultural fields. Qualifications:

This position requires a B.S. with a concentration in agricultural engineering, computer sciences, environmental sciences, or closely related field required with at least 1.5 years of relevant professional experience, OR a Master's degree or higher in a related field.

Preferred Qualifications

Training in computer sciences and statistics with field research experience is preferred. The successful candidate should have experience in data curation, analysis, and management of agricultural datasets. Preference will be given to individuals with an interest and experience in statistics, data science, and computer programing but also with an interest in field research.
