The OB Command Center RN is responsible for the on-going surveillance of the Perigen Viglance dashboard and further reviews the Perigen analytics data, the FHR tracing in FetalLink, and documentation in Cerner based upon the alert on the dashboard. Additionally, the OB Command Center RN provides RN's and/or providers with immediate notification of alerts and participates in subsequent patient care planning.

1. Reviews the dashboard for alerts for abnormal vital signs (VS) that meet maternal early warning parameters and fetal heart rate (FHR) tracings.

2. Analyzes and accurately interprets FHR tracings with category II and III alerts and identifies specific parameters that require further intervention. Accurately interprets baseline FHR, FHR variability, and decelerations. Trends duration that FHR pattern is in the alert state. Review nursing documentation in order to confirm that RN is proceeding with appropriate intervention or notifies the RN that the FHR tracing requires further bedside evaluation, intervention, and/or provider notification.

3. Identifies maternal vital signs that fall within the maternal early warning parameters. Trends duration. Review nursing documentation in order to confirm that RN is proceeding with appropriate intervention or notifies the RN that maternal VS require further bedside evaluation, intervention, rapid response team notification, and/or provider notification.

4. Completes log sheets accurately and thoroughly.

5. Notifies team leader, charge RN, and/or provider as appropriate

  1. Answers telephone and communicates clearly when receiving information from units or providers. Uses clear and complete communication with unit personnel when delivering information about changes in patient FHR parameters or VS.
  2. Maintains clean and organized work area.
  3. Promptly engages hospital chain of command in response to a critical patient condition that warrants an immediate clinician response
  4. Prepares and provides end of shift report which includes patient alerts, FHR parameters, and VS; untoward occurrences, and current plan of care.
  5. Ensures adequate monitor coverage at all times; secures replacement coverage for all breaks.
  6. Prioritizes and organizes work assignment and adjust priorities based on changing situations.
  7. Develops a rapport and cooperative relationship with nursing and clinical staff and responds to questions/requests from healthcare providers.
  8. Practices proper safety techniques in accordance with hospital and departmental policies and procedures. Immediately reports any mechanical or electrical equipment malfunctions, unsafe conditions or employee/patient/visitor injury-accident to Manager.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES, LICENSE OR CERTIFICATION REQUIRED:

  1. Must be a graduate of an accredited school of nursing and licensed as a RN in the State of Georgia in good standing without limitations.
  2. Minimum of two (2) years of full-time experience as a RN in Labor and Delivery
  3. Completion of AWHONN advanced fetal monitoring course every 2 years
  4. Must possess and maintain current the knowledge of uteroplacental perfusion, fetal heart rate physiology, fetal acid-base status, intrauterine supportive measures, and electronic fetal monitoring technology and the ability to interpret FHR and document.
  5. Must possess and maintain current knowledge of maternal early warning vital sign parameters, potential underlying contributors to abnormal VS, and current relevant practice guidelines
  6. Certified in American Heart Association's Basic Cardiac Life Support (BLS).
    1. Other REQUIRED cardiopulmonary resuscitation certifications (ACLS, NRP, PALS, etc.) are unit specific. Please refer to the specific clinical unit.
  7. Certified in Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics (ALSO)
