UMKC School of Medicine: Council on Curriculum

Job Description

Position Overview: We are seeking a highly organized and detail-oriented Curriculum Coordinator to join our team. The Curriculum Coordinator plays a critical role in planning, coordinating, and supporting the development of curricula for the UMKC School of Medicine B.A./M.D. program. This position involves working closely with faculty, staff, and students to ensure successful curriculum delivery and compliance with accreditation standards. The individual will also provide advising and academic support to students, helping them navigate their scholastic programs and track their academic progress.

Key Responsibilities:

Curriculum Development & Implementation (20%):

o Assist in the planning and development of curricular structures and coordinate the design, development, and publication of educational support materials.

o Schedule and organize the delivery of curriculum; assist in presenting established policy as needed.

o Collaborate with faculty to implement all aspects of curricula, including managing LMS platforms (e.g., Aquifer, Canvas) and providing training on educational tools.

Student Advising & Academic Support (50%):

o Manage and oversee all policies and processes related to Step 1 and Step 2 (MD national certification exams), serving as the subject matter expert. Advise students through all stages of the exam process, while tracking and reporting on student progress.

o Develop individual student curriculum and educational plans and provide academic advising on course selections, substitutions, and academic progress.

o Advise students on issues such as academic probation, drop procedures, and career preparation, including guidance for CBSE, Step 1, and Step 2 exams.

o Refer students to relevant university departments (e.g., Student Affairs, Council on Evaluation, Counseling Services) for additional support.

Data Management & Reporting (20%):

o Compile and analyze data to support curriculum updates and improvements, as well as to report on national accreditation standards.

o Assist with preparing materials and reports for accreditation needs, including participating in AAMC training and webinars.

o Gather, analyze, and report data related to Step 1 & Step 2 exam performance, offering recommendations for curriculum and policy improvements.

* Administrative & Supervisory Functions (10%):

o Provide administrative support to curriculum leadership and elective faculty, assisting with proctoring exams and managing course enrollment processes.

o Supervise staff, including selecting, training, and providing daily oversight to ensure efficient workflow.

o Serve as a liaison between faculty, tutors, and technical support staff in the production and delivery of curriculum materials, ensuring timely publication of policies, guidebooks, syllabi, and other resources.

o Oversee updates to the department's webpage and support administrative processes for student orientations and other events.

Collaboration & Communication:

o Collaborate monthly with department managers, councils, and committees, including Student Affairs, the Council on Curriculum, Curriculum Steering, and Clerkship Directors.

o Explain and enforce academic policies, procedures, and regulations, providing clear communication and troubleshooting support to students and faculty alike.

Ideal candidate will have the following skills & qualifications (or potential to gain skills within 6 months):

* Proven ability to manage and coordinate complex curriculum development processes.

* Experience in academic advising, with a deep understanding of curriculum structure, academic progress monitoring, and remediation processes.

* Strong organizational and data management skills, with proficiency in LMS platforms (e.g., Canvas, Aquifer) and student tracking systems (e.g., Oasis, Pathway).

* Excellent communication skills, capable of building consensus and explaining complex information to a variety of groups.

* Familiarity with accreditation processes.

* Ability to lead small projects and manage multiple responsibilities, while maintaining attention to detail.

Shift

Work Schedule: Office hours are Monday - Friday, 8:00AM - 5:00PM.

Opportunity for flexible schedule/remote work.

One Saturday once a month may be required - these dates are established for advanced planning.

Minimum Qualifications

A bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience and at least 2 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in academic advising, academic medicine, or advanced administrative responsibilities. Ideal candidate would have experience working with data and creating reports.

Anticipated Hiring Range

$21.28- $22.48 per hour, commensurate with education, experience, and internal equity.
