Departmental Summary

The Department of Neurology at UT Southwestern Medical Center is a nationally recognized leader in the comprehensive management of neurological conditions. Our vibrant department comprises more than 75 full-time faculty in 12 subspecialty sections, supporting a spectrum of complex and innovative approaches to neurological care, a broad range of novel research programs, and a panoply of educational opportunities for trainees. The department offers access to the latest innovative treatments in one of the most rapidly advancing fields of medicine and features an Advanced Comprehensive Stroke Center and a Level-4 NEAC Epilepsy Center. Through collaborations with the O'Donnell Brain Institute, the department is building state-of-the art facilities for drug and device testing and bringing current and new faculty together for collaborative research on brain disease therapy.

As a research coordinator in the Tsai Lab within the Department of Neurology, this position will provide assistance with clinical research conducted at the University of Texas Southwestern, including but not limited to study development, coordination, implementation, fiscal monitoring, and data entry. These studies will focus on cognitive and behavioral challenges faced by individuals with neurodevelopmental and neuropsychiatric conditions. This position will coordinate all aspects of the project in support of the Principal Investigator and ensuring that UT Southwestern's policies are followed with regard to the particular trials assigned. The Research Coordinator also establishes and maintains an effective working relationship with research staff, monitoring organizations/departments, participants and their families, and the Institutional Review Board (IRB).

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION

Required Education



  • High School Diploma or Associate's Degree in medical or science related field or Bachelor's Degree medical or science related field and no prior experience
  • Experience 2 years experience with High School Diploma or 1 year experience with Associate's Degree


Preferred Qualifications *



  • Bachelor's degree
  • 1-2+ years of job-related experience
  • 6 months research experience is preferred
  • English fluency, Effective professional communication skills: Ability to communicate with others in a clear, understandable, and professional manner.
  • Intermediate to advanced computer skills including a variety of software applications (e.g. spreadsheet and database type programs.
  • Knowledge of application management software
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Effective, organizational skills and attention to detail; effective follow-through, and commitment to excellence.
  • Physical and emotional health adequate for attendance requirements and performance, which may include, but is not limited to: assessment of patient conditions, appropriate use of technical equipment, and rapid recognition and response to emergency situations.
  • Experience working with children with neurodevelopmental challenges


JOB DUTIES *

  • Implements and coordinates research studies sponsored by Children's, other institutions and pharmaceutical/biotechnology companies
  • Follow study protocol in scheduling and performance of test and procedures.
  • Assists with Collecting, labeling and storing data and performing analysis.
  • Schedule, monitors and evaluates patients involved in research studies.
  • Ensures compliance with hospital, IRB, HIPAA and funding agency regulations
  • Screens patient records, recruit patients and obtain informed consent for research studies.
  • Creates and maintains study specific databases. Educates and oversees others in data collection
  • Assists the Principle Investigator in developing the Protocol, Project Summary, Consent Form, IRB paperwork, budget, FDA Forms, Investigator's Agreement(s), and other required documentation.
  • Functions as a liaison between clinical research investigators and various organizations/ departments/ agencies including but not limited to; Institutional Review Board, FDA,Grants Management, the Research Department, Patient Business Services, and sponsor/monitors.
  • Coordinates, assists with or carries out other procedures ordered for research study patients. May not carry out clinical procedures. It is expected that the coordinator will normally perform all study procedures that are within their clinical purview. * Assists in development of grant applications and budget documents.
  • Provides trial information and develops reports as needed. Reports adverse events to appropriate internal and external entities.
  • Collects data both retrospectively and prospectively as required and approved. *
  • Performs literature searches as needed.
  • Assists the PI with fiscal management of the trial. Maintains awareness of all charges for trial participants and ensures that the patient care charges are allocated appropriately.
  • Provide in service training to all necessary participants and communicate study information to affected departments
  • May be required to present Data Safety and Monitoring Boards.
