The Derre Laboratory in the Department of Microbiology, Immunology, and Cancer Biology at the University of Virginia School of Medicine is seeking a Laboratory Specialist to work on projects investigating the mechanisms supporting Chlamydia trachomatis infections. Under the supervision of the PI, the incumbent will participate in laboratory projects involving a combination of microbiology, cell biology, molecular biology, microscopy and small animals (mice) techniques. Research activity conducted includes, but is not limited to, maintenance of eukaryotic cell lines, generation and amplification of Chlamydia strains, general molecular biology techniques (cloning and sequence analysis, immuno-precipitation and western-blot), image acquisition of Chlamydia infected cells or tissue by standard and confocal microscopy, image analysis using microscopy computer software, small animal (mice) handling and infection. PHYSICAL DEMANDS This position can spend extensive periods of time standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals. Also requires keyboarding and other bench work and animal procedures requiring finer finger manipulation.
