Job Overview

The Forensic Nurse Examiner (FNE) is a specially trained registered nurse who is competent to care for adults, adolescents and pediatric patients who are victims of violence. The FNE performs forensic medical evaluations for the collection and preservation of evidence for sexual assault and other forensic cases. The FNE provides prophylactic therapy per standing order for sexually transmitted infections and pregnancy prevention; and provides follow-up care and is available to participate in the judicial process by providing expert witness testimony.

Qualifications

Education: Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN). Completed Colorado-recognized comprehensive sexual assault forensic examiner program which includes at least 64-hours of didactic education on adult/adolescent and pediatric forensic evaluations.

Experience: Minimum of two (2) years of Emergency Department, Intensive Care Unit (ICU), Women's Health, or Pediatric experience.

Equivalency: None

Certification(s): BLS/CPR from the American Heart Association with at least 6 months left before expiration is required upon hire.

Licensures(s): Licensed as a Registered Nurse (RN) in the state of Colorado.

POPULATION SPECIFIC CARE

a.) Neonate - <30 days

b.) Infancy - >30 days to 1yr

c.) Toddlers - >1yr to 3yrs

d.) Pre-Schoolers - >3yrs to 5yrs

e.) School age - >5yrs to 13yrs

f.) Adolescent - >13yrs to 18yrs

g.) Adult - >18yrs to 65yrs.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

An employee in this position may be called upon to do any of the following essential functions. These examples do not include all functions which the employee may be expected to perform.

  1. Performs and documents complete forensic medical evaluations for the collection and preservation of evidence for sexual assault or other types of forensic cases.
  2. Provides scheduled, on-call coverage to ensure appropriate FNE availability.
  3. Participates in the judicial process as necessary by providing expert witness testimony in the court of law.
  4. Delivers patient and family centered care incorporating the nursing process while providing developmentally appropriate, culturally sensitive, evidence-informed care.
  5. Supports and participates in quality assurance and process improvement activities and initiatives.
  6. Performs individual, team member, and organizational professional development by completing continuing education, case studies, literature review, chart reviews, and other activities.
  7. Maintains competency through active performance of cases, including through simulation, with no lapse between cases of greater than six months.
  8. Functions with a high degree of autonomy and works well with interdisciplinary teams, including Emergency Department (ED) providers and clinical staff, Child Protection Team (CPT), Social Work, Law Enforcement, etc.
Other Information

Guidelines: Fully qualified, full performance or journey level. Guidelines are generally but not always clearly applicable, requiring the employee to exercise judgment in selecting the most pertinent guideline, interpret precedents, adapt standard practices to differing situations, and recommend alternative actions in situations without precedent.

Complexity: Duties assigned are generally complex and may be of substantial intricacy. Work assignment is performed within an established framework under general instructions but requires simultaneous coordination of assigned functions or projects in various stages of completion.

Decision Making: Exercises judgment and discretion, and is responsible for determining the time, place and sequence of the work performed.

Communications: Contacts with team members, clients or the public where explanatory or interpretive information is exchanged, defended, and gathered and discretion and judgment are required within the parameters of the job function.

Supervision Received: Performs work with minimal supervisory oversight. Under general supervision, the employee receives assignments and is expected to carry them through to completion with substantial independence. Work is reviewed for adherence to instructions, accuracy, completeness, and conformance to standard practice or precedent. Recurring work clearly covered by guidelines may or may not be reviewed.

Salary Information

Hourly Rate of Pay: $47.51

As part of our Total Rewards package, Children's Colorado offers an annual employee bonus program that rewards eligible team members based on organizational performance. If organizational goals are met for the year, the bonus is paid out the following April.

Children's Colorado delivers annual base pay increases to eligible team members based on their performance over the previous year.
