Reporting to the Director of Data Science Development, the Data Scientist III is a senior level individual contributor role in the Data Science & AI Department on the Data Science Development team. This "Developer" focused role is a Data Scientist who is not only a strong critical thinker and problem solver but also has a high proficiency in writing and deploying production quality object-oriented and/or pipeline-oriented Python code for creating process automation solutions and solving business problems with logical, analytical, and machine-learning techniques within cloud-native architecture.

Role qualifications:

  • A creative mind with excellent analytical, critical-thinking, and problem-solving skills that reliably demonstrates attention to details and accuracy in execution.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Python and SQL programming.
  • Ability to independently explore and manipulate large, complex data sets and extract value from them using ETL and ad-hoc scripting skills.
  • Hands-on AI/ML algorithm development experience leveraging ML libraries and frameworks.
  • Experience developing and deploying production AI product Python code in a cloud-native, micro-service environment following change control and release cycle best practices.
  • Strong proficiency with software tools/practices such as Git, linting, and unit/integration testing.
  • Ability to quickly learn and skill-up with unfamiliar data and/or products.
  • Ability to thrive in both collaborative and independent work environments.
  • Autonomous worker, able to break down medium-sized user stories into tasks and drive work to completion.
  • Strong communication skills including discussions of technical concepts, conducting peer-programming sessions, and explaining development concepts.
  • Bachelor's degree in (CS, Math, Data Science, Engineering, or other quantitative field) + 4 yrs work experience, or computational MS + 2 yrs, or PhD yrs with computational research experience, or overall equivalent length of requisite work experience in lieu of a degree.

Nice to have:

  • Experience working with large scale healthcare claims and clinical data.
  • Proficiency coding with Pyspark and/or Scala.
  • Familiar with healthcare data standards.
  • Experience with (preferably) AWS or another public Cloud Platform services and tools.
  • Experience working in an "Agile" and/or "Scrum" development environment using tools such as JIRA
  • Knowledge of/experience with DevOps/MLOps concepts.

What you will be doing:

  • Solve business problems and discover meaningful business narratives told by the data by performing data exploration and mining and applying statistical techniques and machine learning algorithms.
  • Conduct research and collaborate with product management and business stakeholders following design thinking principals to understand requirements and then design analytical and technical, code-based solutions that meet business objectives.
  • Extract and manipulate large data sets, leveraging tools including Python, PySPark, and SQL.
  • Demonstrate solution/algorithm feasibility by developing data science solution prototypes and communicating risk and limitations that may impact deliverables.
  • Write production-quality, optimized code using test-driven development practices and applying data-driven QA to guide the creation of clearly documented, clean quality software.
  • Write and maintain unit and integrations testing suites, QA, and UAT scenarios for production products.
  • Contribute to production software maintenance and deployment practices, including production code repo. and CI/CD pipeline processes such as git actions and hooks, package and environment creation and maintenance, and updating or implementing infrastructure as code.
  • Identify areas where automation could increase team efficiency and independently design and implement useful automated solutions.
  • Provide mentorship and guidance to junior associates, modeling effective working relationships solution-building, and Jira ticket planning/creation that demonstrates team and Availity culture and values.
  • Other tasks as assigned to meet team commitments.
  • Perform code review for production-ready software solutions, giving constructive feedback to teammates, where appropriate, on opportunities for improvement of coding practices.
  • Practice fastidiousness and self-awareness toward task completion and time management work effort to meet project deadlines.
  • Support project timeline estimation and planning efforts.
  • Communicate actionable insights to internal stakeholders and teams.
