JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics at Penn State invites applications for the Evolving Universe Postdoctoral Fellowship. We seek candidates with strong research programs in observational galaxy evolution who will develop an independent research program in collaboration with Dr. Joel Leja. All sub-categories of galaxy evolution science are encouraged. Key areas of interest include the James Webb Space Telescope, spectral energy distribution modeling, the formation histories of galaxies and galaxy populations, and novel applications of data-intensive techniques. Fellows will have the opportunity to join a wide range of JWST teams performing deep surveys of the early universe as well as the Subaru Prime Focus Spectrograph (PFS) Galaxy Evolution survey, a 130-night survey on the 8-meter Subaru telescope, with first light anticipated in 2025.

The successful candidate will join the vibrant and large research community at Penn State, including over 60 faculty and faculty affiliates and nearly 50 graduate students. They will benefit from interactions with the Center for Astrostatistics, the Institute for Computational and Data Sciences, and the Institute for Gravitation and the Cosmos, and will have access to the Roar supercomputing facility.

Education and Experience

A PhD in Physics, Astronomy, or a closely related field is required. Previous experience with galaxy evolution is highly desirable but not required.

Additional Information

The Evolving Universe Fellow is a term appointment with guaranteed funding for two years, with a third year renewal possible. The salary is $75k/year in a low cost of living area with an $8k/year research budget. We especially encourage applications from members of under-represented groups.
