To provide independent advanced level nurse practitioner clinical expertise to patients and their families on an on-going basis. This includes the management of chronic stable medical conditions, routine care, acute or critical care, and medical and specialty protocols (e.g. chemotherapy) as defined by standardized procedures or independently based on licensure. This may include non-invasive or invasive procedures, surgical procedures, including operative first assist per approved standardized procedures as identified by the list available on the Medical Staff Office. Patient management decisions are independent where appropriate after assessment of the patient and interdependent with consultation with an attending or other member of the team. NPs are expected to act as an expert resource person for SOM_SON care providers including nurses, residents and other ancillary staff.
Provides patient care in a team based care environment to a diversified patient population. Applies knowledge, experience and judgment to determine the importance of a situation, set priorities, and use abstract thought to evaluate clinical situations. Participates in patient and staff education. Demonstrates leadership skills. Demonstrates accountability for own practices as defined by the Nurse Practice Act.

Minimum Qualifications
- 1 year or greater experience as a Nurse Practitioner.
- 1 year of Pediatric NP experience or FNP experience with 50% or more pediatric caseload.
- Valid California Registered Nurse License without restriction
- California Nurse Practitioner Furnishing License
- California Certified Nurse Practitioner (NP) without restriction
- Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Certificate within 3 months of hire
- American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) or UC Davis Health CPR
- National NP board certification in aligned specialty with the practice area
- Graduation with a master's degree, DNP or PhD in Nursing from an accredited School of Nursing.
- Experience with electronic medical record.
- Ability to cope with personal stress experienced by team members, other professionals, and caretakers
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills

Preferred Qualifications
- Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist.
- Direct clinical experience managing pediatric diabetes patient population.
- At least 2 years NP experience in Pediatric Endocrinology.
- Knowledge and understanding of insulin pumps including closed loop pump systems. Ability to adjust pump settings based on blood glucose profiles. Ability to troubleshoot basic technical issues arising during insulin pump use.
- Knowledge and understanding of continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) including interpretation of CGM reports.
- Knowledge of basic treatment guidelines for type 1 and type 2 diabetes in children.
- Ability to use medical and nursing knowledge in the evaluation of a variety of medical and surgical problems by obtaining an accurate history and performing an appropriate physical exam.
- Must have knowledge necessary to thoroughly interview a patient and perform a complete physical exam.
- Must have knowledge necessary to arrive at a correct assessment and care plan.
- Verbal skills to elicit complaints from various socio-economic groups and communicate effectively with parents, patients, nurses, staff and physicians. Must be able to clearly communicate patient problems and needs to consult.
- Advanced level of knowledge and nursing skills specifically in area of clinical practice; ability to apply relevant theories and concepts to clinical practice.
- Ability to assess and effectively meet the needs of the patient and their family,
- Knowledge of hospital policy and procedures, standardized procedures and scope of nursing practice.

Department Overview
The vision of the Department of Pediatrics is the healthiest future for all children and families through outstanding patient care, transformative research, innovative medical education, and community-based advocacy.
Under the supervision of the Chief of the Section of Pediatric Endocrinology, the Nurse Practitioner is responsible for clinical care following specific standardized procedures. The Nurse Practitioner provides primary care to ambulatory endocrinology and diabetes patients through regular health assessment and management of common acute and stable conditions. The primary role of the Nurse Practitioner is to collaborate with other health care professionals in assessing and managing health care problems, maintaining continuity of care and coordinating services the patient requires in an outpatient setting. The Nurse Practitioner will also oversee and help coordinate care of children newly diagnosed with diabetes and recently discharged from the hospital, in collaboration with Endocrinology physicians. The Nurse Practitioner will also teach UCDMC nursing staff and residents. The Nurse Practitioner will participate in research projects in the Division of Endocrinology. The work hours for this position are 8:30AM to 5:30PM Monday through Friday.
