Hiring Range

The University of California, Merced is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience. The full salary range for this position is $86,300 - $161,300. The budgeted salary range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $95,000 - $118,500.

Job Closing Date

This position is approved for a hybrid work modality. Number of days approved for remote work is undetermined and will be based on department and business needs.

About the Job

The Director of Finance for Auxiliary Enterprises and Fiscal Innovation (AFI) will report to the Associate Vice Chancellor of Auxiliary Enterprises and Fiscal Innovation (AFI). As an experienced financial professional, the Director of Finance manages the full range of the organization's operating and capital budgets, forecasting, long-term financial plans, financial analyses, tracking and reporting, financial reconciliations, and other ad hoc analyses. This highly analytical position utilizes advanced-level forecasting methodologies and analytical skills to aid leadership in developing their financial resource plans, budget strategies, and distribution of resources. Having a range of experience, Director of Finance uses advanced professional concepts and organizational objectives to resolve complex issues with organization-wide impact in creative, innovative, and highly effective ways.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Complex financial analysis & strategic support for Auxiliaries & Fiscal Innovation portfolio: Conducts and manages advanced financial analyses relating to revenue streams, payroll and non-payroll expenses, capital expenses, debt service, monthly budget vs. actuals, strategic planning and modeling, analyzing and forecasting, and ad hoc analysis per the department's needs. Directs, initiates, designs, and presents analytical studies, summary reports, and financial analysis to Campus and AFI leadership on budget, financial, and other resources management and administration. Coordinates gathering budgetary and resource requirements information during planning stages, such as the annual budget process. Works closely with AFI Leadership and Operations to provide insights and support for unit decisions. Extensively applies knowledge of finance and budget policies, practices, and systems; budgeting and reporting techniques; accounting; and human resource planning. Provides support with a client service-focused approach, utilizing strong listening, communication, critical thinking, and analysis skills.
  2. Policy driven planning and implementation: Develop and recommend internal policy / procedural changes affecting functional areas. Ensures that the appropriate internal controls are addressed, maintained, and strengthened to protect University resources. Uses an expert understanding of industry practices and organizational policies to resolve complex or difficult assignments.
  3. Directing Supervision, training and project planning: Supervises activities associated with creating, maintaining, and reporting operational and capital budgets and budget processes, forecasting and long-term financial plans. Works independently and as part of a team; prioritize work and manage a variety of projects simultaneously with accuracy and detail; attempt unfamiliar projects/assignments and respond with flexibility to requests for assistance with conflicting demands; work with ambiguities where clear guidelines are not available; and be service oriented. Selects, develops, and evaluates personnel to ensure the efficient operation of the function. Trains staff and maintains an effective team environment.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in related discipline; and/or
  • Advanced degree in related discipline; and
  • 5 years of related experience or 9 years equivalent related experience/education (required); and
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) certification (preferred).
  • Extensive knowledge of finance policies, practices, and systems, budgeting and reporting techniques, and accounting.
  • Solid understanding of financial and resource planning concepts as well as how to control organizational budgeting.
  • Ability to prepare and present materials to internal and external constituents.
  • Extensive knowledge of human resource policies, practices, and planning.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing.
  • Advanced skills in the use of spreadsheet and database software.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively across the organization at all levels.
  • Proven ability to deal with changing priorities and direct the work of others accordingly. Ability to multi-task.
  • Demonstrated ability to screen applications, interview candidates, and either make selection decisions or recommend individuals for hire.
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of internal control practices and their impact on protecting University resources.
