Position Overview

This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to a life sciences government affairs team that represents a cutting-edge, growth-oriented company with a footprint across the United States. At Exact Sciences, our vision is to eradicate cancer and the suffering it causes through tests that detect it earlier and provide guidance for successful treatment. As a leader in cancer testing, we are committed to providing earlier answers and life-changing treatment guidance. Exact Sciences' current portfolio of products centers on colorectal cancer, breast cancer, rare diseases, genetic testing, and other precision oncology tests.

The Government Affairs Intern will have broad exposure to government affairs operations, practical hand-on experience working to deepen their understanding of the legislative process legislative policy and issues. Conducting research and analysis on policies affecting access to cancer screening and diagnosis; assist in drafting and development of materials and communications for engaging federal, state, and local policymakers about Exact Sciences. The position is intended to be a full-time opportunity for an undergraduate student to obtain hands-on government affairs and advocacy experience contributing to the company's effort to provide earlier, smarter solutions in the fight against cancer.

This is a paid position that starts in May and is 40 hours per week, lasting into the first week in August and is only available in our Washington, DC office.

Essential Duties

Include but are not limited to the following:

  • Contribute to a variety of lobbying, policy, and political tasks in support of the U.S. government affairs team.
  • Draft memos/ppt on election race coverage
  • Provide well-written material for engagement with Members of Congress, legislative staff, Executive branch principals and trade association partners.
  • Draft correspondence, talking points and background materials for use by the government affairs team and executives within Exact Sciences.
  • Attend congressional briefings, hearings, trade association meetings, and similar events and provide concise written and verbal feedback to the government relations team.
  • Specific tasks will be tailored to the intern's experience level, abilities, and interests.
  • Complete and present a major capstone project, in support of the government affairs team, by the end of the internship.
  • Uphold company mission and values through accountability, innovation, integrity, quality, and teamwork.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High energy and willing to engage in any situation
  • Keen attention to detail and exceptional writing abilities
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Able to conduct analysis of relevant issues and topics
  • Inclined toward teamwork and understanding this is a collaborative position
  • Interest in healthcare policy
  • Must be able to be in-person in Washington, DC office 4/5 days week.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Politically interested and comfortable in bipartisan office
  • Attentive to daily news cycle, as well as long term trends in healthcare and public policy
  • Enrolled in a bachelor's degree in political science, public policy, communications, English or a related discipline

Salary Range:

$39,000.00 - $62,000.00

The annual base salary shown is for this position located in US - DC - Washington on a full-time basis.
