Position Overview

The Systems Software Intern, with guidance from more experienced engineers, assists in the design, development, and testing of software used in medical devices. Working with a mentor, the Systems Software Engineering intern will primarily be involved in Systems Development projects assisting in the development of internal software tools used in Research and Development, service, or quality control. This position is intended to be a full-time opportunity for an undergraduate to obtain engineering experience in an industry setting.

Essential Duties

Include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Essential duties:
    • Learn about the aspects of the software development lifecycle for a medical device.
    • Assist in the implementation of software specifications.
    • Assist in the improvement, maintenance, and debugging of software of basic complexity.
    • Assist with troubleshooting of system issues.
    • Code and execute modules/unit tests of basic complexity and document results.
    • Help in the creation of internal software tools to enhance data analysis and data management productivity.
    • Understand architectures of software-driven systems.
    • Learn proper documentation techniques for software design using generally accepted notation (i.e. UML).
    • Research, investigate and fix a wide range of technical issues.
  • Soft skills which are required to perform the job:
    • Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment within a team.
    • Apply professional written and verbal communication skills.
    • Support and comply with the company's Quality Management System policies and procedures.

Scheduling requirements:

  • Ability to work designated schedule.

Physical requirements:

  • Ability to work on a mobile device, tablet, or in front of a computer screen and/or perform typing for approximately 85% of a typical working day.
  • Ability to work on a computer and phone simultaneously.
  • Ability to use a telephone through a headset.
  • Ability to lift up to 40 pounds for approximately 5% of a typical working day.
  • Ability to grasp with both hands; pinch with thumb and forefinger; turn with hand/arm; reach above shoulder height.
  • Ability to comply with any applicable personal protective equipment requirements.
  • Ability to use various types of laboratory equipment; including microscopes, microtomes, blades, strainers, and pipettes for extended periods of time.
  • May perform repetitious actions using lab tools.
  • Ability to use near vision to view samples at close range.
  • May be exposed to hazardous materials, tissue specimens, and instruments with moving parts, lasers, heating and freezing elements, and high-speed centrifugation.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in a bachelor's degree program in computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering or similar field.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in software development outside the classroom (projects, student organizations, etc.)
  • Relevant coursework in engineering and software concepts
  • Preference giving to candidates with a record of outstanding academic achievement.
  • Basic understanding and experience with a software language (Java, C#, Python, or related language)
  • Demonstrated ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without accommodation.
  • Authorization to work in the United States without sponsorship.

Salary Range:

$34,000.00 - $54,000.00

The annual base salary shown is for this position located in US - WI - Madison on a full-time basis.
