We seek a Vice President of Engineering who is enthusiastic about environmental stewardship and prepared to steer our engineering practice team towards groundbreaking achievements.

This is a full-time, regular (with benefits), salaried position. The position can be based near any SWCA office in the United States and highly qualified, remote employees will be seriously considered.

The Vice President of Engineering will champion our civil and ecological engineering initiatives, exhibiting a strategic vision that promotes project excellence, innovation, and the integration of our distributed teams into a cohesive, effective unit. The ideal candidate will possess a comprehensive background in civil or environmental engineering, a profound understanding of ecological restoration design and implementation, and a proven track record in developing and executing extensive business and growth strategies. This role is pivotal in acting as the key communication link between our Executive and Senior Leadership teams and the engineering practice team. This role will connect the engineering practice team with market opportunities, ensuring strategic coherence and fostering a culture of transparency and collaboration. Additionally, the Vice President of Engineering will serve as the key subject matter expert on civil and environmental engineering practice, certifications, and licensing across the USA and within individual states, guiding our practices to maintain the highest standards of professional excellence.

What you will accomplish

  • Strategic Leadership & Team Integration: Develop and implement strategic plans that align with our mission, emphasizing the unity of distributed engineering teams across the company. Partnering with peer leaders in other areas of SWCA's business will be necessary and result in successful outcomes.

  • Annual Business Planning & 5-Year Growth Strategy: Lead the annual business planning process and formulate a strategic 5-year growth plan for the engineering practice team that aligns with SWCA's broader environmental services strategy and risk profile.

  • Career Development Pathways: Advocate for the professional growth of our engineering staff by enhancing career development pathways and opportunities, including mentorship programs, continuing education, and clear progression tracks. Lead the engineering team through clients and project work.

  • Project Excellence: Ensure all engineering projects and tasks surpass our quality standards, budget, and timeline expectations. Oversee the assessment and management of risk exposure in engineering practices.

  • Key Communication Link: Serve as the principal communicator between the engineering practice and the Executive and Senior Leadership teams, conveying engineering achievements, challenges, and market opportunities to ensure strategic alignment and informed decision-making.

  • Subject Matter Expertise: Act as the key subject matter expert on civil and environmental engineering practices, certifications, and licensing, staying abreast of USA-wide and state-specific requirements to ensure our team adheres to the highest standards of professional excellence.

  • Innovation & Sustainability Advocacy: Champion innovative engineering practices and ecological restoration methods, driving sustainable solutions through technology and innovation.

  • Client Relationships & Operational Excellence: Build and maintain strong client relationships, ensuring project deliverables exceed expectations, and streamline department operations to optimize resource and process efficiency.


Experience and qualifications for success

  • Bachelor's or master's degree in civil engineering, Environmental Engineering, or similar engineering field, with a Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • At least fifteen (15) years of civil engineering experience, including five (5) years of significant leadership experience managing large-scale, distributed projects.
  • Demonstrated expertise in ecological restoration design, energy-related civil engineering - site design, hydrologic/hydraulic analysis, and construction phase services.
  • Experience managing projects with multi-disciplinary teams of engineers, natural resource specialists and other professionals.
  • Exceptional leadership skills, with a focus on strategic planning, team integration, and promoting innovation.
  • Superior communication abilities, skilled in effectively working across an agile, matrixed organizational structure.
  • A client-focused leader that understands market drivers and conditions that may create opportunities or challenges for SWCA; examples of long-term client relationships of at least 5 years preferred.
  • Strategic thinker with a history of driving performance and achieving significant growth outcomes.
  • Deep commitment to sustainability and advancing environmental improvement initiatives.
  • Applicants must have valid driver's license and be able to meet SWCA's driver requirements.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Twenty (20) years of civil engineering experience.

An employee in this national based position can expect a salary of: $181,330/year to $235,695/year. Actual pay within this range may depend on experience, qualifications, geographic location, client requirements where applicable, and other factors permitted by law. Regular-status employees are also eligible for performance bonuses.
