Job Title: Lead Technical Writer
Work Location: Hybrid - Lorton, VA & Remote (onsite during the week as requested by client)
Clearance Required: DHS Public Trust EOD, US Citizen (Secret or above preferred)

Job Summary:

Alpha Omega is seeking a Lead Technical Writer to oversee and guide a cross-functional agile development team in a dynamic, fast-paced environment. The selected candidate will take on a leadership role in managing documentation efforts and driving the team's success, while fulfilling the responsibilities outlined in the Responsibilities section.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:



  • Responsible for creation and management of HSI System Engineering Lifecycle (SELC)/Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC) documentation
  • Responsible for the management of HSI's Confluence Knowledge Management Pages
  • Parse existing documents and artifacts for key information and preferred language; to then be applied to new documentation
  • Ensuring consistency with all documentation and messaging


  • Provide leadership and mentorship to a team of technical writers, ensuring high-quality documentation and continuous improvement in writing standards.
  • Serve as the primary liaison between the documentation team and senior leadership, presenting updates, identifying risks, and proposing solutions.


  • Serve as central POC for stakeholders searching for current documentation
  • Prepare, review, revise, and maintain technical documents, including software and systems engineering, system operations, testing, and user documentation.
  • Gather and analyze technical and product information from various sources to document new or changing product functionality.
  • Write, format, edit, review, and proof procedural and technical information for technical and nontechnical users.
  • Assist in planning, scheduling, and tracking documentation work to meet product release dates and client deliverables.
  • Maintain a library of application documentation, cataloging it for internal and/or external use.
  • Publish and maintain templates for written documentation produced by others (technical specifications, RFP responses, etc.), ensuring a consistent "look and feel."
  • Create in-depth user guides, FAQs, technical overviews, and in-product help documentation.
  • Test both the product and its documentation for accuracy and consistency.
  • Identify problem areas or structural deficiencies and proactively contribute to their improvement.
  • Regular use of a content management system (CMS) to manage the lifecycle of technical documentation including draft, review, and publish phases.
  • Become a subject matter expert of the [redacted] platform and how the different tools are used to perform various construction related tasks.
  • Regular communication and synchronization with the Director of Documentation and Certification.


Required Skills/Experience:



  • 3-5 years of experience required in an IT development environment.
  • 2-3 years of experience writing System Engineering Lifecycle (SELC)/Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC) documentation


  • Proven leadership experience in a technical writing role, with a track record of managing or mentoring a team of writers or contributors.


  • Experience with online technical writing tools such as Confluence, Adobe, SharePoint.
  • Experience in creating documentation for audiences with different levels of technical skill.
  • Excellent writing, editing, and communication skills.


Required Education:



  • Bachelor's degree in business or IT related field. Bachelor's degree in English or Journalism (experience in lieu of degree is acceptable)

  • Experience with Knowledge Management
  • Knowledge of the Software Development Process
  • Knowledge Process Improvement Best Practices
  • Excellent English writing skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills, ability to work with a variety of peer teams
  • Commitment to quality
  • Ability to collaborate with diverse remote teams in different time zones
  • Self-driven and looking for ways to work around hurdles
  • Ability to multi-task and work with shifting priorities
  • Experience with Microsoft SharePoint and Confluence


Preferred Certifications:



  • Scrum Alliance CSM or CSP certification or PMI's Agile Certified Professional (ACP)
