Learning Media - MEDIA DESIGNER - DAY TO DAY
- As a media designer, my day to day consists of processing, tracking, and fulfilling media requests submitted by Client Learning & Development and at times, other departments. Media request deliverables can consist of 2D and 360 videos, photographs, audio files, graphic designs, motion graphics, web designs, and 3D animations. These media deliverables are most often either used in a training product or are a self contained training product. For example, producing all the videos that appear in QLX our Quarterly Learning Product. Another example could be a thank you video for internal branding of the department. Media Requests require me not only to collaborate with stakeholders but also talent who may appear in videos, photographs, or other media.
- I also manage and maintain all the equipment used for media production. Media equipment used includes a laptop, mirrorless cameras, 360 cameras, mirrorless camera lenses, tripods, led lights with soft box modifiers and stands, wireless lavaliere microphone kits, iPad with teleprompter kit, backdrop stands and crossbar, paper backdrops, and more.
- At any given time, I can be fulfilling 4 to 15 different media requests that are of various scope, status, and deliverable type. Media requests all generally follow a process of discovery call, pre-production, production, postproduction, and distribution.
- In a discovery call, I meet with stakeholders, and we review the request. We discuss the challenges, goals, existing plan, timeline, etc. I then conceptualize and modify the plan as needed to produce the media and meet defined goals within available scope and time.
- In pre-production, I will do various tasks that depend on the deliverable type and request. This can include reviewing and collecting existing assets, creating or modifying scripts/shot lists/storyboards, preparing equipment, and scheduling shoot dates with talent and location managers.
- Production also varies by deliverable type. For videos and photographs this can include lighting, camera operating, directing talent, and audio recording. We film at Hartsfield Jackson Airport, various places in client general offices, and other locations including but not limited to other airports such as Seattle, Nashville, and LAX Airports. Standalone audio recording includes operating audio equipment on location or in our audio booth. Production for other deliverables typically takes place in specialized software programs on the computer.
- Post-production includes processing raw media files. This can be processing, editing, and color grading video and photographs, processing audio, creating and editing designs for graphics and motion graphics, etc. Post-production is usually the longest phase taking at minimum three times as long as production. I use specialized software to perform these tasks. Most notably I use the Adobe Creative Cloud Suite with Premiere Pro, After Effects, Audition, Illustrator, and Photoshop. It would be advantageous for someone doing these tasks to also be familiar with Blender and DaVinci Resolve.
- Post-production goes hand in hand with the review process of working with stakeholders and processing and change requests. From there, I finalize deliverables and may be responsible for loading them into distribution via (SharePoint), Elevate (NovoEd), or any other method requested.
- I'm responsible for tracking and reporting the media requests that are in various stages of this process to management. I also present media projects (both complete and in progress) to my team. Following the outlined process using the specialized skills and tools discussed ensures the efficient operation of the Client Media Program.
