The City of Takoma Park is seeking a Librarian to perform reference and circulation duties in support of library operations; plan, develop and coordinate library programs for children, teens, and/or families; and assists in the selection of materials.

This is a part-time position expected to work 25 hours per week: Sunday 11:00 AM - 6:00 PM (the Library closes on several Sundays throughout the year to observe Holidays) and Monday through Wednesday 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM. Supervisors can work with the successful candidate to determine a new permanent schedule between Monday through Saturday to best accommodate Children & Young Adult services and programs (e.g. to develop programs outside of school hours).

This position is eligible for membership in the AFSCME union.

Typical Duties include:



  • Assists the public with informational and circulation needs.
  • Resolves patron questions, concerns, or complaints.
  • Plans, promotes, and implements library programs for children, teens, and/or families on- and off-site; conducts related research; develops program goals and strategies.
  • Assists with the collection and compilation of statistics.
  • Contributes to general collection development in areas of expertise.
  • Develops and maintains relationships with other City departments, community organizations, businesses, schools, and/or individuals.
  • Contributes to communicating information about library services and programs via a variety of media.
  • Maintains an awareness of library trends and issues; reads professional and related literature; attends workshops, seminars, and conferences; maintains professional affiliations.
  • Responsible for library building, patrons, and substitute staff in the absence of supervisor.
  • Performing related duties.



Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities required to be successful are:



  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of library science.
  • Knowledge of children, teens, and/or intergenerational library programming standards and principles.
  • Knowledge of computers and job-related software programs.
  • Knowledge of library collection development principles.
  • Skill in the use of an automated library system.
  • Skill in interpersonal and public relations.
  • Skill in the preparation of clear and accurate reports.
  • Skill in problem solving.
  • Skill in prioritizing and planning.
  • Skill in interpersonal relations.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
  • Fluency in a language other than English is a plus.


Minimum qualifications include



  • Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with the completion of a baccalaureate degree in a course of study related to the occupational field.
  • Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/ internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.



The hourly wage for this position is expected to be between $33.34-39.27 and will be offered at a level consistent with the experience and qualifications of the candidate. We offer a highly competitive benefits package, including 100% paid premiums of medical, dental, and vision insurance for employee only coverage, and 80% paid premiums for dependents.
