THE ROLE

Plans, organizes and directs the Providence Pharmacy and Credena Health including pharmacy programs such as Long Term Care pharmacy services, Credena Specialty pharmacy services, Home Infusion, compounding for PH&S hospitals and medication therapy management.

MAJOR CHALLENGES:



  1. Maintaining systems and processes in a rapidly changing environment.
  2. Maintaining Infusion and specialty pharmacy services identity while integrating processes and personnel within Home Services.
  3. Development and integration of Long Term Care pharmacy program within Home Services.
  4. Staying competitive in a very dynamic market place in which competitors are large national for profit companies.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS



  • Establishes criteria to measure the achievement of short and long range goals and objectives for all Pharmacy ministries. Closely monitors results and revises strategies and objectives.
  • Develops and manages daily operations for Credena Health, Infusion, Long Term Care Pharmacy and hospital compounding services consistent with regional goals, strategies and policies. This includes formulation, monitoring and coordinating policies, and establishing and maintaining efficient systems, procedures and financial controls.
  • Responsible for provision of high quality staffed programs, including orientation, continuing education and skills training.
  • Works with Chief Executive and Providence Health System Leadership in developing and coordinating strategic growth plans, including operating budgets, long range plans and business plans. Ensures that the health care services are provided in a cost-effective manner and within budget.
  • Participates with marketing activities designed to create new markets and to expand service lines and geographic base as needed.
  • Ensures the attainment of Credena Health objectives through the management of personnel. This includes, but is not limited to, providing a safe and challenging work environment for employees.
  • Encourages the integration of Specialty Pharmacy services and related Providence Pharmacy programs within the community (including other community programs, welfare and human resource agencies), utilizing effective public relations programs.
  • Develops and implements a quality assurance program, including compliance with standards as required by federal, state and local regulatory bodies. Assures compliance with all accreditation and legal requirements.
  • Utilizes and controls labor, equipment and supply costs. Produces reports on performance.
  • Develops annual budget and monitors revenue and expense reports.
  • Seeks out opportunities through new technology, new services and/or reorganization of work flow to realize cost savings, improvement in services and generation of new revenue.
  • Participates in selection and oversight of pharmacy information systems. Assures computerized charging structure is current and appropriate for services/products provided and patient charging is completed daily and accurately.
  • Assures that patient plan of care is appropriate and cost effective.
  • Maintains excellent physician relationships.
  • Develops policy and procedure manual for pharmacy services and informs staff of all policies and procedures.
  • Assures pharmacy documentation and patient care practices meet The Joint Commission (TJC) and URAC requirements and state and federal regulations. Assures that patient care records are complete. Provides corrective action is taken whenever practices are non-compliant.
  • Ensures accountability and inventory is maintained over all narcotics and controlled drugs. Assures security of pharmacy and its contents according to state and federal regulations.
  • Assures appropriate communication channels are intact and used by staff. Acts as a role model to staff through respectful collaboration with nursing, other healthcare providers, patients/families and management.
  • Provides regular and organized staff education and orientation regarding related pharmacy and nursing issues, equipment and procedures. Promotes and teaches appropriate clinical concepts and practice standards that will assure quality patient care.
  • Performs evaluations, staff counseling and discipline.
  • Interviews and makes recommendations for hire of new clinical and support staff.
  • Assures staff schedules, work assignments, timecards and related compensation vouchers are completed.
  • Participates in the delivery of direct patient care activities as necessary.
  • Maintains in-depth clinical knowledge and expertise in the specialty of clinical pharmacy services to include home infusion and long term care.
  • Utilizes sound management principles and delegates responsibility effectively.
  • Demonstrates continuing self-development and attends educational and mandatory programs.
  • Maintains a high degree of visibility with the Credena Health, Infusion and Long Term Care Pharmacy staff, patients, referral sources and supporting institutions and departments, to promote and ensure respect and viability of the program. Actively engages in and supports regional Home Infusion activities and objectives.
  • Oversees and is accountable for the purchase of all pharmaceuticals. Assures that Pharmacy services maximizes its purchasing power through collaboration with other PHS Pharmacy purchasing service lines.
  • Collaborates with finance & executive leadership across divisions to create solid partnerships to ensure sustainability and growth of pharmaceutical services
  • Provides guidance and direction for governance of appropriate financial management oversight, operational & capital budget planning and forecasting, labor planning and benchmarking internally and externally to ensure operational efficiencies within pharmacy business units and regional pharmacy shared services.
  • Understands how people and organizations function and is able to maneuver through complex political situations effectively. Manages up in support of others throughout the organization.
  • Work closely with Human Resource executives & business partners in developing & implementing key strategies for hiring and retaining highly talented & diverse pharmacy workforce. Ensure robust career ladders for pharmacy technicians, pharmacists, pharmacy leaders and other business specific positions are fully developed to maintain high performance teams & success measured through objective internal & external benchmarks for individuals working at the top of their license.
  • Establishes and maintains retention strategies for high performing employees, supporting individual and team growth and development.
  • Develop key relationships with regional & system executives, operational leaders, physician leaders, & clinical leaders across the organization through expert-to-expert collaborative initiatives.


QUALIFICATIONS



  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college of Pharmacy
  • PharmD - Pharmacy
  • Master's Degree in Business or related healthcare field (preferred)


Upon hire: Oregon Pharmacist License (Vendor Managed); or Alaska Pharmacist License (Vendor Managed); or Montana Pharmacist License (Vendor Managed); or California Pharmacist Registered (Vendor Managed);or Texas Pharmacist Registered (Vendor Managed; or New Mexico Pharmacist Clinician - New Mexico Board of Pharmacy (Vendor Managed); or Washington Pharmacist License (Vendor Managed)



  • 10 or more years of experience in leadership role
  • 12 or more years of experience as a Pharmacy Manager or Specialty Pharmacy Program Leader
  • Understanding of how the health care delivery system works in terms of the relationship among patients, physicians, hospitals, community agencies and third party payors, as well as an understanding of the impact of the changing and competitive market is required
  • Able to work closely with an established team of professionals. An ability to quickly establish rapport, gain respect and to lead is essential
  • Executive presence and management skills necessary to provide leadership, achieve desired goals and interact effectively with company boards, the management of affiliated hospitals and health care and business community, and representatives of local state and national bodies
  • Effective interpersonal, decision-making, written and verbal communication skills.
  • Assertiveness in the presentation and selling of ideas, balanced by sensitivity to the views of various interest groups
  • An innovative, entrepreneurial, high-energy, market driven executive with proven skills in developing and implementing new concepts and programs, evidence of the ability to provide direction in a rapidly changing and highly competitive environment
  • Ability to deal with stress and ambiguity as part of the evolution of organizations and the industry as a whole
  • Position requires limited travel.
