Position Summary

To achieve this outcome, the university must procure financial resources from funding agencies and organizations that support an innovative and cutting-edge environment; thus, WSSU seeks a dedicated and detail-oriented grant writer to join its Office of Research and Sponsored Programs.

The Grant Writer will play a pivotal role in increasing the university's research funding by identifying, developing, and submitting competitive grant proposals. The individual will collaborate with faculty, staff, and administrators across the university to support efforts in securing external funding for research, academic programs, and institutional initiatives. The ideal candidate will have strong writing, editing, and project management skills, as well as a proven track record in securing grants from government agencies, foundations, and corporate partners. Minimum Qualifications:
* Master's degree in English, Communications, Public Administration, or a related field.
* Minimum of three years of experience in grant writing or a related role in higher education, non-profits, or research institutions. Experience in securing grants from federal agencies (e.g., National Institutes of Health, National Science Foundation, United States Department of Education) is highly desirable.
* Proficiency in researching grant opportunities and understanding agency-specific requirements.
* Familiarity with budgeting and financial principles related to grant submissions.

Preferred Qualifications
* Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to craft persuasive narratives.
* Strong organizational and project management skills, with the ability to handle multiple deadlines.
* Ability to work collaboratively across academic and administrative units.
* Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google Suite, and grant management software (e.g., Grants.gov).

Specific Job Duties:
The grant writer will have responsibility for performing the following job duties:

Grant Proposal Development

  • Collaborate with faculty, researchers, and administrators to develop and write high-quality, competitive grant proposals for submission to federal, state, and local agencies as well as private foundations.
  • Translate complex technical concepts into clear and persuasive language suitable for diverse funding audiences.
  • Assist in the development of grant budgets in collaboration with the finance and accounting offices.


Grant Research

  • Proactively research and identify grant opportunities that align with the vision, mission, and strategic priorities of WSSU.
  • Remain current on funding trends, policy changes, and grant requirements from various funding sources, including federal agencies (e.g., NIH, NSF, DoE).
  • Participate in grant writing training sessions and other professional development offered by various funding agencies.

Grant Coordination and Support

  • Guide faculty and staff through the grant application process, ranging from concept to submission to ensure all proposals meet deadlines and sponsor requirements.
  • Support post-award activities by working with staff to meet grant reporting, compliance, and documentation requirements.

Editing and Review

  • Review, edit, and proofread grant applications to ensure accuracy, clarity, and compliance with agency guidelines.
  • Provide detailed feedback to faculty on proposal drafts to enhance the quality and competitiveness of submissions.

Tracking and Reporting

  • Maintain a database of submitted and funded proposals, including deadlines, funding status, and reporting requirements.
  • Prepare regular reports for university leadership on grant activity and success rates.

Training and Capacity Building

  • Support the Office of Sponsored Programs by offering workshops, training, and one-on-one coaching sessions for faculty and staff to build grant-writing capacity across campus.
  • Assist in developing internal resources and templates for successful grant writing.
