Cherokee Strategic Solutions is seeking an Archaeologist to conduct Phase I archaeological surveys, including site assessments, fieldwork, and artifact analysis at a DoD facility. The role involves developing and executing a work plan, excavating shovel test pits, processing artifacts, and preparing detailed technical reports in compliance with Virginia standards. Archaeologist Responsibilities Include: * Conduct archaeological surveys that will assess the presence of documented and undocumented archaeological resources within an area of potential effects (APE) at a given location. * Conduct phase I archaeological surveys to include a records review, archaeological survey, archaeological laboratory work (as needed), and reporting. * The archeologist will perform an identification (Phase I) archaeological survey of 30-acres at a DoD facility. The precise boundaries of the survey area will be finalized after a project kick-off meeting. The survey will be performed in accordance with Virginia standards and guidelines (VDHR 2017), and will include background research, field survey, laboratory analysis and processing of artifacts, and documentation / reporting. * The archeologist will prepare an archaeological work plan for review and acceptance by the client. The work plan will include details on the methods to be employed in the Phase I survey, a surveyschedule, and the names and contact information of key staff conducting the survey. A statementof qualifications for the key staff will be included. As a note: one month prior to the field survey. The archeologist will conduct a Phase I field survey in accordance with the approved work plan. The fieldsurvey will include the excavation of shovel test pits (STPs) on a regular sampling grid. Highpotential areas will be sampled on a 15-meter grid, in accordance with VDHR guidelines (2017). * Recovered artifacts will be processed, analyzed, and temporarily curated at a archeological laboratory. Upon completion of the Project, the archeologist will prepare all artifacts and other primary fieldrecords (field notes, maps, photographs, inventories, etc.) for permanent curation. It is understood that artifacts will be curated with the client's RegionalArchaeological Curation Facility, and that the collection will be required to meet the facility's standards. * The archeologist will prepare a technical report in accordance with VDHR guidelines. The project report willsynthesize the historical research, archeological fieldwork, artifact analysis, and interpretation into a study report. The report will include scaled maps of the work areas, showing the location ofmonitoring, any archaeological features unearthed, and other pertinent information.
