July 1, 2025 Application Window Open date: October 11, 2024 Next review date: Tuesday, Dec 3, 2024 at 11:59pm (Pacific Time) Final date: Monday, Jun 30, 2025 at 11:59pm (Pacific Time) Position description The Department of Film and Media Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara is conducting a search for an Assistant Teaching Professor, a Senate faculty position in the area of Film and Media Critical Analysis and History. This position is focused on teaching, and the requirements for the equivalent of tenure are related to teaching performance and department and university service. We invite applicants who can teach broadly in the areas of film and media history, theory, and criticism. This colleague will teach in our undergraduate core curriculum, including our pre-major and major writing-intensive requirements, which focus on narrative and formal analysis, international cinema and media history, and film and media theory. They will also offer electives in their areas of interest or teaching expertise. Such areas could include: genres and authorship; national/international film and media; global media studies; historical periods and movements; experimental and avant-garde; television studies; digital media; media industries; documentary; feminist/queer film and media theory; gender and sexuality; audience and fan studies; media and the environment. The teaching workload for this position is 7 courses per year or equivalent to 7 courses. The University is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through teaching, research, and service as appropriate to the position. The faculty of the Department of Film and Media Studies engages in scholarship and pedagogy encompassing multiple scholarly approaches and a dynamic understanding of film and media study. We are an internationally recognized department with a robust faculty of scholars and practitioners and over 600 undergraduate majors and 30 doctoral students. With this appointment we seek to expand the department's curricular strengths and advance our department's commitment to diverse and rigorous interdisciplinary research and teaching.
