Job Summary

The Accountant will be responsible for managing the financial transactions, project accounting, and reporting for a construction company. This position involves monitoring project budgets, ensuring compliance with financial regulations, and preparing accurate financial reports. The ideal candidate is a detail-oriented professional with strong knowledge of accounting principles and experience in the construction industry.

Key Responsibilities
  • Financial Reporting: Prepare accurate and timely financial statements, including income statements, balance sheets, and cash flow reports, on a monthly, quarterly, and annual basis.
  • Project Accounting: Manage and track the financial performance of construction projects by monitoring job costs, progress billing, and contract payments. Ensure proper allocation of expenses to specific projects.
  • Accounts Payable (AP): Oversee the AP process, including reviewing vendor invoices, ensuring accuracy, approving payments, and managing subcontractor agreements and lien waivers.
  • Accounts Receivable (AR): Prepare and send client invoices, manage collections, track payment schedules, and follow up on outstanding accounts.
  • Budgeting & Forecasting: Assist in the preparation of annual budgets, project cost forecasts, and financial plans. Track project budgets and provide variance analysis against actual expenditures.
  • Reconciliation: Reconcile bank statements, project accounts, and other financial records to ensure accuracy. Investigate discrepancies and resolve issues promptly.
  • Cash Flow Management: Monitor cash flow to ensure that sufficient funds are available for project expenses and company operations. Provide recommendations to improve financial stability.
  • Payroll & Labor Cost Tracking: Oversee payroll processing and ensure accurate allocation of labor costs to projects. Ensure compliance with labor laws, union agreements, and relevant contracts.
  • Compliance: Ensure compliance with financial regulations, including tax filings, sales tax, W-9s, and 1099s. Prepare documentation for internal and external audits.
  • Job Costing: Track and analyze job costing information, including materials, labor, and overhead expenses. Provide detailed reports to project managers and stakeholders.
  • Internal Controls: Maintain strong internal controls to safeguard company assets and ensure the integrity of financial data.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with project managers, procurement, and estimating teams to ensure accurate financial tracking and reporting for all projects.
  • Audit Support: Assist with preparing and providing documentation for internal and external audits.
Qualifications & Skills
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required.
  • 3-5+ years of accounting experience, preferably in the construction industry.
  • Strong understanding of GAAP and job cost accounting.
  • Proficiency in accounting software such as QuickBooks, Sage, Viewpoint, or other industry-specific programs.
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel and other Microsoft Office applications.
  • Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical abilities.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Familiarity with construction project management software is a plus.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate with cross-functional teams.
Working Conditions
  • Primarily office-based with occasional visits to construction job sites.
  • Full-time position with typical hours Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with possible extended hours during busy periods.
