POSITION TITLE:Lab Technician, Technical Education
STATUS: Part Time
DEPARTMENT: Technical Education

REPORTS TO: Instructor, Mechanical Production Technology
PLACEMENT: Grade 105
MINIMUM PAY RATE:$20.00 per hour

POSITION SUMMARY
Assists instructors in building teaching aids; maintaining inventory of tools and equipment; communicates with vendors, maintenance and custodial services; ensures adherence to safe practices and housekeeping rules.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Clean, lubricate, repair and check calibrations of tools and equipment in the manufacturing laboratories.
2. Supervise student workers that will be performing laboratory cleaning, lubricating machines, and repairing tools and equipment.
3. Ensure all safety equipment is kept in good operating condition and all safe practices and housekeeping rules are followed.
4. Ensure that all laboratories and equipment are kept clean.
5. Use office equipment, hand tools, measuring tools, machine tools and have the ability to build items from prints, written and oral instructions.
6. Design and build special equipment for the laboratories.
7. Assist instructors in building teaching aids.
8. Update and maintain inventory records of tools, equipment, furniture and supplies.
9. Order tools, equipment and supplies; order replacement parts for tools and equipment.
10. Contact vendors to install, service, calibrate and repair tools and equipment as necessary.
11. Contact JJC Maintenance and custodial staff to perform building and/or machine repairs.
12. Participate in departmental and collegiate goals and objectives.
13. Perform other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
1. Earned nine (9) credit hours in Technical Department in classes related to metal working or maintenance which include classes from the following area: Manufacturing Technology, Welding Technology or Industrial Maintenance Technology or an equivalent of one year of related trade or mechanical training.
2. Demonstrated mechanical aptitude.
3. Ability to use hand power tools, all machines used in the Manufacturing machining lab, precision measuring instruments and common office equipment.
4. Ability to set up and operate machine tools such as tool and utility grinder, drill press, band saw, milling machines, lathe, belt and disc sander, dry blast machine, surface grinder and heat treatment furnace.
5. Ability to read prints.
6. Ability to make custom parts from a blue print.
7. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with other members of the college and community, displaying cultural competence as well as emotional intelligence.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
1. Certificate of Completion in Mechanical Production Technology.
2. Over two (2) year related experience.
3. Personal Computer skills.
4. English and Spanish verbal and written communication proficiency.
5. Demonstrated multicultural competence.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
1. Mechanical production and office equipment, hand tools, measuring tools, machine tools.

WORKING CONDITIONS
1. Duties are performed indoors in the manufacturing machining lab environment.
