Position Summary Information
Minimum Qualifications |
- Earned doctorate degree in public health or an associated discipline. Candidates who are ABD* will be considered (see below). Candidates whose degree is in a related discipline must demonstrate academic experience and credentials to be considered applicable for designation as core public health faculty by accreditation standards.
- Experience with teaching and/or research in one or more of the core areas of public health (epidemiology, biostatistics, social and behavioral science, health policy and management, and/or environmental health).
*ABD will be considered for this position. Evidence of successful defense of the dissertation must be received by July 31 for a fall hire or November 30 for a spring hire. If confirmation of defense is not provided by the deadline the candidate will receive a new one-year fixed-term contract and be hired at the rank of Instructor. The candidate's salary will also be reduced to a lower rate commensurate with other full-time instructors in the same department. However, if degree verification is provided before the end of the one-year fixed-term contract the candidate will be returned to the rank of assistant professor with commensurate compensation beginning July 1 of the following academic year. |

Description of the Department or Unit |
The
Department of PHES comprises nationally accredited and recognized programs including the Bachelor of Science degree in Exercise Science, Bachelor of Science degree in Public Health, the Master of Science Degree in Exercise Science, and the online Masters in Public Health (
MPH) program. The
Exercise Science program is the largest program within the Beaver College of Health Sciences with well over 1000 students. The
Public Health program is currently accredited as a standalone Baccalaureate program by the Council on Education for Public Health (
CEPH) and is seeking accreditation for its new
MPH program. The department currently supports faculty with diverse research and practice backgrounds. It also enjoys numerous strong, long-term relationships with regional health providers and public health agencies. Learn more at

Appalachian State University's
Beaver College of Health Sciences (BCHS) is transforming the health and quality of lives of individuals, families, and communities through inclusive practices, interprofessional collaboration, and innovation in teaching, scholarship, service, and clinical outreach. The
BCHS supports over 3,400 students in nine undergraduate and nine graduate degree programs organized into six academic departments. The programs are located in Boone in the Holmes Convocation Center and the Leon Levine Hall of Health Sciences, the cornerstone of Boone's Wellness District. We also have a presence on our new campus in Hickory. The college supports the Appalachian Institute for Health and Wellness and has a collaborative partnership with the Wake Forest School of Medicine's Physician Assistant Program and multiple health and human service agencies across the region. Essential Duties and Responsibilities |
Tenure-track faculty members teach at both undergraduate and graduate levels, provide academic and professional mentoring, are expected to maintain an active program of scholarship, participate in service activities at the program, department, college, university, and profession levels as well as collaborate with community stakeholders and/or professional organizations. |
