Job Description

AES CE is an established and rapidly growing renewable energy company headquartered in Salt Lake City, UT. The AES Operations team is looking for Lead Technician with field experience. This position will cover assigned O&M activities associated with Wind farms. This individual would play a pivotal role in ensuring that AES CE operates the portfolio to standards that exceed industry best-practice. The ideal candidate will be a self-starter, and have the ability to build, train and lead other field personnel. As AES CE grows to become one of the leaders in the renewable industry, this role will provide an unparalleled opportunity for professional growth.

This is a field work and administrative position that includes both the oversight of wind turbine technician activities and the performance of technician duties. The person holding this position will be collaborating with a variety of departments on the immediate and long-term planning and scheduling of work for the site technicians, coordinating teams for maintenance and repair activities, as well as ensuring technicians are following procedures in a safe, environmentally conscious, and professional manner. The role also requires performing maintenance, operation, troubleshooting, and repair of wind turbine generators.

Duties & responsibilities:

  • Set the example and encourage a safe, environmentally conscious, and professional work culture.
  • Perform regular wind turbine technician duties as needed on site conditions.
  • Act as the wind turbine systems subject matter expert while supporting field technicians.
  • Evaluate the technical skills of technicians to identify strengths and opportunities for improvement.
  • Work with Performance Engineers to identify potential faults and failures proactively.
  • Perform regular quality assurance and quality control inspections on work performed on site.
  • Fill in during technician absences or when coverage is otherwise unavailable.
  • Evaluate work standard operating procedures to find opportunities for improvement.
  • Ensure timely and detailed documentation of technician work activities within the CMMS.
  • Act as a liaison between technicians, contractors, and site leaders.
  • Research and provide specifications of turbine parts and tooling for the purchasing department.
  • Submit purchase requisitions for tools, services, and materials.
  • Evaluate and approve refurbished materials and first articles from vendors.
  • Assist in technical training and skills evaluation of technicians.
  • Collaborate with various departments, contractors and vendors on work planning and scheduling.
  • Call out employee performance issues to team leaders and provide feedback for periodic reviews.
  • Make business decisions grounded in the AES Values.
  • Monitor the tool inventory at the wind farm, maintain consumables and spare parts inventory.
  • Complete and maintain required and accurate documentation and records associated with corrective and preventive maintenance of wind turbines and associated equipment.
  • Conduct and review safety analyses of potential electrical and mechanical hazards in the wind turbines, Sub Station, and switch yard.
  • The ability to follow switching orders for the substation and for Pad mounted transformers.
  • Support the BOP O&M manager in maintaining facility compliance with all regulatory entities including OSHA, NERC, and any regional regulatory body.
  • Perform minor equipment repairs (substation, collection, and transmission) and document work performed.
  • Perform facility inspections (substation, collection, and transmission) on weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual intervals or as appropriate. Document inspection results.

Qualifications:

  • 5-year minimum experience working in wind turbine and substations.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Good planning, organizational, and decision-making skills
  • Ability to adjust to constantly emerging work priorities and schedules.
  • Ability to analyze technical data and make sound judgement decisions and recommendations.
  • Ability to understand and read and comprehend electrical/mechanical drawings and information.
  • Excellent customer service skills and the ability to interact with individuals
  • Strong computer skills including Microsoft Office, SCADA systems, cloud computing, etc.
  • Must have an unrestricted driver's license and be able to speak English.
  • Must meet the weight requirements for the safety equipment and wind turbine equipment.
  • Knowledge of SAP, Concur or similar systems for reporting work and expenses.

Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Minimum 5 years of work experience in wind power or a degree from an established Wind Power Maintenance Program with 2-3 years of field experience.

Additional Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to work in challenging environments, remaining focused and calm in the face of distractions and adversity.
  • Communicate effectively with diverse groups.
  • Ability to continuously learn and adapt to change.
  • Troubleshoot complicated mechanical and electrical problems and assist technicians with encouraging trouble shooting.
  • Assist in all areas of site operations with minimal direction as directed by facilities manager.
  • Document all work performed using computer-based software.
  • Capable of improving skill level by attending sponsored training sessions
  • Work with Facilities Manager and Engineering to implement upgrades and retrofits.

Working Conditions:

  • Exposure to hazards associated with power generation with employer safety controls provided to mitigate those hazards in accordance with regulations and standards.
  • Requires climbing, standing, sitting, walking, kneeling, twisting and other postures daily.
  • Must work in temperatures below 32 F to over 100 F and in wind speeds above 45 mph.
  • Requires occasional travel outside service area to support other AES Clean Energy activities.
  • Must wear a variety of personal protective equipmentas directed by standards and regulations.
  • Must be able to work at elevated spaces and climb multiple tower ladders every day; lift a minimum of 40 pounds as required by maintenance activities; operate hand and power tools and work in all weather conditions.
