Overview

Orrick currently has an excellent opportunity for a Chief of Staff - Business Development. This position could be based in any of our U.S. offices (Austin; Chicago; Boston; Houston; Los Angeles; New York; Menlo Park; Orange County; Portland; Sacramento; San Francisco; Santa Monica; Seattle; Washington DC; or Wheeling, WV) and consideration given for 100% remote US locations.

The Objective: As the Business Development Chief of Staff, you will play a pivotal role in driving Orrick's Business Development function and ensuring its seamless execution and top-quality support for our partners.

What will I do? You will be a strategic partner to our leadership team, serving as a key liaison between the Managing Partner and business development professionals and other key business partners globally. You will deliver a proactive, hands-on, detail-oriented approach with exceptional people management and workflow management skills. And you will bring a relentless focus on operational improvement and innovation to all you do.

How will I spend my time? You will spend most of your time on these responsibilities:



Responsibilities

    People Management:
  • Lead the day-to-day functioning of the sector and markets and pitch business development teams, managing priorities, workflows and communications to ensure strategic goals are met with consistent high quality and efficiency.
  • Oversee talent acquisition, onboarding, and career development programs.
  • Handle sensitive HR matters with discretion and confidentiality.
  1. Workflow and Project Management:
  • Streamline and optimize internal processes to enhance efficiency and productivity.
  • Work closely with leadership and business transformation team to develop and implement policies, strategies, and initiatives, driving alignment with the firm's strategy.
  • Optimize technology, data and AI adoption, including ROI reporting, business intelligence, etc.
  • Monitor project timelines and deliverables to ensure deadlines are met.
  • Identify bottlenecks and propose solutions to enhance workflow.
  • Take ownership of special projects as needed.
  • Ensure project goals are met by coordinating resources and activities.
  1. Coordination and Communication:
  • Effectively communicate firm strategy and the practical application to the business development team.
  • Facilitate effective communication within department and with other business partners.
  • Foster a culture of collaboration and cross-functional teamwork.
  • Coordinate and lead regular team meetings to enhance communication and alignment.
  • Provide regular updates on project status to leadership.


Qualifications

Position Qualifications:

  • A bachelor's degree or equivalent experience is required. An MBA, master's degree, or law degree is preferred.

  • 15+ years of related work experience.
  • Proven experience leading teams, ideally within a professional services environment, or equivalent high-performing organization.
  • Integrity, tact, and professionalism in dealing with sensitive information and maintaining client confidence.
  • Absolute trustworthiness, confidentiality, and discretion.
  • Demonstrated superb, consistent judgement.
  • Exceptional project management skills, including the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines with a high degree of detail and accuracy.
  • Outstanding communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to build relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Strategic thinker with the ability to anticipate needs, identify opportunities, and drive initiatives to completion. Strong problem-solving skills.
  • A collaborative and team-oriented mindset, with the ability to work effectively in a dynamic, results-driven environment.
  • A passion for challenging the status quo, a hunger for greatness, and an unwavering commitment to achieving extraordinary results.
  • A good listener with a growth mindset and proven ability to adapt quickly to change and exhibit a high degree of flexibility.

Compensation and Benefits

The expected salary range for this position is between:

  • California Major Markets* $305,000 - $350,000
  • New York City $305,000 - $350,000
  • National $275,000 - 325,000

* California Major Markets includes San Francisco, Silicon Valley, Los Angeles, Orange County, Santa Monica. All other California locations fall within National range.

Orrick is committed to providing a comprehensive, competitive, and thoughtful total compensation package to our attorneys and staff, wherever they work. This compensation and benefits information is based on the Orrick's estimate as of the date of publication and may be modified in the future. The level of pay within the range will depend on a variety of job-related factors that may include, but not limited to, qualifications, relevant experience or education, particular skills or expertise, geography. Other compensation may include an annual discretionary merit bonus, which would be determined by Firm and individual performance.
