Job Summary

The Office of the Commissioner of the Revenue is seeking applicants for their Summer Real Estate Appraiser Internship Program. The internship provides a combination of mentoring, learning activities, and projects, providing a unique opportunity to work in an elected official's office. Interns are afforded opportunities to gain a deeper understanding of local government, types of local revenue, the assessment of real and personal property, business taxes, and how field work is used to promote data accuracy.
Assignments vary, allowing the opportunity to exercise research, analysis, and creativity skills, while providing a practical and challenging experience that will equip interns with valuable customer service aptitudes, exposure to assessment tools, understanding of basic property assessment administration, and home construction. College credit endorsed by request. Primary responsibilities include collecting and analyzing data on residential properties via internal (electronic and hard copy) records or through external in-person field visits; verifying data related to new construction and existing properties; measuring and calculating floor area square footage and sketching dwellings; reconciling property characteristics on County records; reviewing applications for tax exemption; researching for preparation of board items; verifying property use during field visits; and assisting and supporting the full-time staff with other related tasks. There is an opportunity for selected candidates to work primarily in one of three focus areas: residential real estate, commercial real estate, or tax exemptions and deferrals.
Duration and Schedule: Tuesday through Thursday for ten consecutive weeks (June 5, 2025 - August 13, 2025).
Hiring salary commensurate with experience.

Minimum Qualifications

Associate's degree or completion of two years of college, computer literacy, excellent written and verbal communication skills, customer service, research and analysis skills, critical thinking. Must be a team player and a self-motivated learner. Experience in the real estate, home construction, or customer service areas is preferred. Internships are open to undergraduate and graduate students currently enrolled in a degree-granting institution, recent graduates, or those that have been accepted into a degree-granting post-graduate program.

Job Contingencies and Special Requirements

Successful candidates will undergo a criminal background check. Must maintain a valid driver's license in Virginia, or regional state of residence. All applicants seeking employment with the Office of the Commissioner of the Revenue are expected to comply with tax obligations. Failure to do so may impede consideration of your application.
Must be able to navigate construction sites that have difficult terrain and be able to work in all types of weather conditions. This position may involve interaction with homeowners, builders, other government agencies, and County staff.
