Position Summary The Department of Geography and Environmental Studies at the University of New Mexico invites applications for an assistant professor in cartography, geo-visualization, or GIScience to begin in August 2025. This is a full-time, assistant professor in geography. Applicants must have a PhD in geography or a related field by date of appointment. We seek a candidate whose research and teaching interests focus on communicating, managing, and analyzing spatial information, including specialists trained in cartography, geo-visualization, geographic information science, and related fields. The successful candidate will apply their technical and theoretical expertise to grow an impactful research program that contributes to the continued growth of a collaborative and highly interdisciplinary department. Priority will be given to candidates who contribute to the department's strengths in GIScience, human-environment systems, communityengaged research, and climate change. The candidate will be expected to teach and advise undergraduate and graduate students on relevant topics such as cartography, spatial data management, spatial modeling, and geographic information systems (GIS). Interest in innovative pedagogies, civic engagement, community outreach, or new and emerging geographical research methods would be an added benefit. UNM offers a vibrant ecosystem of research centers relevant to this position, including the Center for Advancement of Spatial Informatics Research and Education (ASPIRE), Earth Data Analysis Center (EDAC), Center for Global Population Studies (GPS), Center for Advanced Research Computing (CARC), Center for Community Geography (CCG) and others. The Department of Geography and Environmental Studies has been growing in all respects in the last decade, including the addition of a new doctoral program in Geography, a sustainability studies program, the addition of more than 10 new faculty, and the establishment of the Center for CCG and ASPIRE centers. Located in Albuquerque, NM, UNM is New Mexico's flagship university. Albuquerque is New Mexico's principal city and is centrally located to myriad professional and recreational opportunities, including Sandia and Los Alamos National Laboratories. Qualifications Minimum Qualifications 1. Ph.D. in geography or closely related field by start date of appointment 2. Specialization in cartography, geo-visualization, and/or GIScience Preferred Qualifications: 1. Demonstrated strength in teaching at the undergraduate and/or graduate levels 2. An active and defined research program in GIScience 3. Ability to effectively mentor students at the undergraduate and/or graduate levels 4. Interest in and capacity to contribute to GIScience program development 5. A demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and student success, as well as working with broadly diverse communities 6. Demonstrated success in engaging communities, government agencies, and or corporate partners in research 7. Ability to contribute to existing department strengths 8. Ability or potential for obtaining extramural funding to support research and teaching 9.
