Position Purpose |
The Master Plumber applies a high level of skill in implementing of repairs, renovations, new installations, preventative maintenance, modifications, alterations, emergency repairs, and maintains good customer relations while working in College residential, athletic, grounds, academic, science laboratories, medical, administrative, security, and mechanical facilities throughout campus. He/she generally works as a member of a two person team, but also works independently as needed. Assists in all Equipment Maintenance Shop Work as required. |

Required Qualifications - Skills, Knowledge and Abilities |
- High School graduate with at least two years of technical school and a four-year apprenticeship in the plumbing/heating trade.
- 10 years' plumbing experience in commercial/industrial mechanical field; or equivalent experience.
- Must possess a current NH Master Plumber license.
- Must possess a valid Driver's License and be able to qualify as a Dartmouth Approved Driver.

Preferred Qualifications |
- Comprehensive working knowledge and high level of skill in all aspects of the mechanical trades, including plumbing, heating, steam fitting, process piping, acid waste, pipe fitting, fabrication, commercial fixtures/equipment, heat exchangers, sewage treatment systems, pneumatics, hydronic/domestic pumps, control valves, isolation valves, back flow prevention, pressure reducing stations, steam condensate systems, etc.
- Must be able to read blueprints, and independently lay out work with minimal supervision.
- Must exercise sound judgment and problem-solving skills.
- Willingness to work overtime when required.
- Must be knowledgeable of, and follow the most recent international plumbing code.

Key Accountabilities
Description |
- Inspects work sites. Plans and lays-out work involving the installation and modification of plumbing and piping systems and equipment, utilizing blueprints or lay-out sketches when provided.
- Determines work methods, supplies, and tools and plans working details to accomplish work assignments.
- Plans needed routing, placement, slope, and fall of systems.
- Inspects work site to determine presence of obstructions and to ascertain that holes cut for pipes will not cause structural weakness.
- Selects type and size of pipe and related materials ( a variety of metal and non-metal pipes, tubes and fittings including iron, steel, copper, and plastic) and equipment such as supports and hangers according to specifications.
- Cuts pipes, using saws pipe cutter, hammer and chisel, cutting torch and pipe cutting machines. Threads and bends pipe.
- Connects pipes, using threaded, soldered, caulked, brazed, fused, or cemented joints.
- Secures pipe to structure with brackets, clamps, and hangers.

Description |
- Places and connects air, manufactured gas, sewage and water fixtures and facilities such as water mains, lavatories, sinks, stoves and air compression equipment.
- Installs, maintains, repairs or replaces steam lines, valves, radiators, heaters, storage tanks, steam tables, sterilizers, steam traps, control valves, fittings, expansion joints, steam pressure cookers, etc.
- Installs steam boilers and auxiliary equipment.
- Installs, repairs, and maintains reducing valves and stations, condensate pumps, and expansion joints.
- Checks steam systems for malfunction, leaks and defects in equipment; makes necessary repairs.
- Cleans difficult stoppages in drainpipes inside buildings.
- Inspects and tests piping after the completion of repairs or alterations.
- Increases pressure in pipe systems and observes connected pressure gauge to test systems for leaks.
