Auburn University Department of Theatre and Dance seeks a collaborative and experienced individual to join our faculty as an Assistant Professor of Costume Design in the
BFA Design, Management, and Technical Theatre area. The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching (in-person) various courses in costuming, designing for the production season, advising and mentoring students, and contributing to the department's curriculum and program development. This position carries a 3:3 load, which includes a combination of teaching and design responsibilities. Starting date will be August 16, 2025. Review of applications will begin January 3, 2025.
The academic responsibilities include teaching beginning and advanced courses in costume design, stage makeup, costume history, and costume construction. The candidate will supervise directed studies with
BFA Design students and student costume designers and contribute to curriculum development and program assessment.
In terms of design, the candidate will be expected to design costumes for at least two productions per academic year and, in collaboration with the costume shop employees, ensure the timely completion of costume designs to meet production deadlines.
The candidate will also be required to create and maintain a cohesive creative scholarship and research program suitable for obtaining tenure. Creative scholarship and research are wide-ranging and could include designing for outside companies and universities and/or publishing innovative technical or interpretive work. Service responsibilities include participating in departmental meetings, committees, and events and engaging in professional development.
A commitment to collaborative and sustainable practice is essential. The successful candidate will foster a collaborative environment within the department and production teams, promote sustainable practices in costume design and construction, and encourage students to consider environmental impacts in their design processes.

Minimum Qualifications |
MFA or equivalent terminal degree in Costume Design or a related field at the time employment begins.- Demonstrated excellence in teaching at the university level.
- Professional experience in costume design for theatre and dance, or related fields.
- Strong portfolio showcasing a range of costume design work.
- Ability to work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and students.
- Dedication to sustainable and collaborative practices in costume design.
- Proficiency in costume construction (including draping).
The successful candidate must meet eligibility requirements to work in the U.S. at the time the appointment is scheduled to begin and continue working legally for the proposed term of employment. Excellent communication skills are required. |
