POSITION SUMMARY
Seeking to fill a full-time research assistant position. The individual in this position will report to the laboratory manager and is responsible for working in a large shared laboratory area assisting a variety of faculty and graduate students in the conduct of their research, assuring adherence to safety standards established by the Safety Committee by all those working in the laboratory and for cataloging all laboratory chemicals, overseeing equipment maintenance and ordering laboratory supplies as needed.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Duties and responsibilities include (but are not limited to) the following:

Maintaining a safe laboratory environment. This includes assisting with safety training of all students, monitoring chemical orders, inventories, safety materials, and disposing of hazardous wastes
*
Ordering laboratory supplies and maintaining inventories.
*
The candidate must be comfortable with responsibilities including learning laboratory techniques and training students
*
Training and overseeing work-study student assistants as needed.
*
Equipment Maintenance - Regularly inspect and maintain laboratory equipment according to the manufacturer's (or our determined) schedules; schedule inspections and/or calibrations as necessary
*
The successful candidates must be willing to work flexible hours as needed for experiments, and be able to respond to emergencies such as equipment (freezer) failures
*
Techniques can include but are not limited to surgery, injection of drugs and tissue dissection
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
Education
*
A Bachelor's degree in a biomedical or related science field is required
*
A master's degree is preferred
Skills and Abilities
*
Must have the coordination and dexterity to perform laboratory techniques
The following specific skills are desirable and/or will be required to be learned:
*
Good laboratory practices
*
Excellent organizational skills
*
Careful record keeping
*
Ability to understand, execute, complete, and summarize the results for experimental protocols
*
Take initiative to solve unexpected problems
More specific techniques include:
*
Aseptic technique, bacterial culture, viral and cell culture
*
Molecular biology techniques such as PCR, gene cloning, etc.
*
Cell biology techniques such as immunohistochemistry, microscopy, etc.
*
Biochemistry techniques such as enzyme assays, protein purification, western blots, ELISAs, flow cytometer, etc.
*
Animal handling and protocols
*
Development - Expand skill sets by learning new protocols and technologies as directed
Experience
*
One (1) or more years working as a laboratory assistant (required) Two (2) preferred
*
One (1) or more years in animal handling is a plus
**This position is fully on campus Monday - Friday; no weekends
Salary Range: $21.00 - $23.00 The referenced salary range is based on PCOM good faith belief at the time of posting.
