Purpose of Job

This position is responsible for assisting nursing staff in direct and non-direct patient care functions at the direction of the professional nursing staff. This position is responsible for assisting staff in the coordination of intra-and inter-departmental activities and communication.

Job Functions


  1. Processes admissions, transfers, discharges in the electronic medical record per system and hospital requirements. and schedules appointments.
  2. Completes assigned clerical responsibilities, including restocking/ordering of supplies for unit.
  3. Coordinates the care and movement of the patient between other departments or locations; and communicates pertinent information regarding unit/department activities to the appropriate staff.
  4. Under the direction of an RN, assists the nursing staff with direct and non-direct patient care functions.
  5. Obtains and articulates pertinent data in an objective manner.
  6. Documents the various aspects of care according to the established policies and procedures on appropriate forms and records.
  7. Demonstrates competencies in the specialty area of the Orthopedic Institute Inpatient unit.
  8. Assists with cleaning of designated items and equipment.
  9. Provides professional and courteous customer service to internal and external customers.
  10. Recommends opportunities for and participates in quality improvement activities.
  11. Performs other duties as assigned.

Location: The Orthopedic Institute Inpatient Care Unit will be the primary location. May work in the pre-operative and post-anesthesia (phase 2 recovery only) areas at the Orthopedic Institute. May float to other medical-surgical units at Ridgeview Medical Center in Waconia.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities


  • Ability to meet and maintain the necessary background checks as aligned with position functions
  • Ability to communicate in the English language for effective written and verbal correspondence in order to complete job functions as mentioned above
  • Strong communication and listening skills
  • Knowledge of basic computer functions
  • Ability to respond appropriately to unpredictable situation and diverse patient populations
  • Ability to work autonomously and as a team
  • Capable of making independent decisions with the use of good critical thinking and problem solving skills
  • Ability to work and multi-task in a high stress and fast paced environment

Minimum Education/Work Experience


  • High school graduate or equivalent

License/Certification


  • BLS Certificationor obtained with 90-days of hire

Preferred Qualifications


  • Previous Nursing Assistant and/or HUC experience
  • Possession of a Nursing Assistant Certificate
  • Completion of Health Unit Coordinator course
  • Knowledge of medical terminology
  • Experience in a hospital setting
