ISO New England is the not-for-profit, independent system operator responsible for ensuring the safe and reliable flow of electricity in our region and planning for the future of the electric grid. We are at the forefront of New England's ongoing transition to clean energy.

ISO New England's Transmission Planning Team is focused, passionate, team-oriented, and results-driven. Their skills and commitment have aided in transforming New England's bulk electricity system into one of the nation's most innovative, forward-looking examples of industry restructuring. Over the past twenty years, ISO New England planning engineers have played a key role in developing over 800 projects that have been placed in service totaling approximately $12 billion of new infrastructure investment. Currently, the Transmission Planning Team is undertaking the challenge to study the future of the New England transmission system out as far as the year 2050 to determine potential system concerns and any associated solutions. This study will examine the effects of the influx of clean energy resources like solar photovoltaics, onshore and offshore wind, and battery energy storage systems being constructed now and in the future, as well as increases in power consumption due to electrification of transportation and heating. The Transmission Planning Team will be playing a pivotal role in developing a clean, affordable, and reliable 21st century regional electric grid.

The Transmission Planning Team is the Planning Coordinator for the networked electrical transmission system in New England and has:

How you will make an impact:



  • Perform transmission planning studies
  • Simulate electric transmission system behavior
  • Analyze results
  • Develop recommendations to ensure the continued reliability and economic efficiency of the New England electric power system
  • Provide technical and procedural leadership, coordination, and facilitation within ISO-NE and among stakeholders.



What we are looking for:



  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering
  • The ability to (expectations vary by job level):




    • Complete studies to assess system reliability and determine transmission system solutions to resolve concerns
    • Develop data, assumptions, methodology and procedures for use in reliability studies of the New England bulk power system
    • Perform analysis to support NEPOOL, NPCC, and NERC Committee and Working Group work on regional and national transmission planning issues
    • Interact with stakeholders to seek input and address their concerns with respect to transmission system analysis
    • Develop and recommend new business processes and Planning Procedures to the management of Transmission Planning
    • Provide assistance in general Transmission Planning group administration
    • Be proficient in applying planning criteria and conducting computer simulations of transmission system performance
    • Work independently and in a team environment with minimal supervision
    • Communicate at a high level of proficiency in both oral and written form





Desirable qualities include:



  • A power systems concentration in Electrical Engineering
  • Master's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field
  • Experience in electric system operations and/or transmission planning
  • Professional Engineering License



This position requires up to 5% travel with some over nights.
