Job Summary:

With this posting, the Department of Nuclear Engineering and Engineering Physics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (https://www.engr.wisc.edu/department/nuclear-engineering-engineering-physics) is searching for a tenure track faculty member with expertise in nuclear engineering and engineering physics and AI/ML, as part of the RISE-AI Initiative. We would welcome a spectrum of expertise that focuses on developing and utilizing AI/ML algorithms in nuclear energy, including design, optimization and operation of nuclear energy systems. The successful candidate is expected to have a demonstrated academic record of developing, applying, and publishing AI/ML algorithms and/or tools relevant to system design and optimization.

The new hire will have a tenure home in the Department of Nuclear Engineering & Engineering Physics and will join a faculty community in the Institute for Nuclear Energy Systems with diverse research interests related to nuclear energy applications. As a member of a vibrant nuclear energy research community, the new hire will have many opportunities to establish collaborations with both experimental and computational research groups already active on the UW campus. Faculty members are expected to establish and maintain a world-class graduate research program, teach courses, contribute to the education and professional development of a diverse community of undergraduate and graduate students, and engage in department, college, university, and appropriate community and professional service activities.

The Department of Nuclear Engineering and Engineering Physics (NEEP) in the College of Engineering at UW-Madison enrolls approximately 150 undergraduate students and over 125 MS and PhD graduate students from within the state of Wisconsin and from all over the world. The Department has 12 Primary Faculty, 11 Affiliate Faculty who can serve as advisors of NEEP graduate students, and multiple Teaching Faculty, Emeritus Faculty, and Instructional Staff.

UW-Madison, the College of Engineering, and NEEP are home to world-class, collaborative research efforts from cancer and heart disease to clean energy and space travel. The department of Nuclear Engineering & Engineering Physics integrates fundamental physics, mathematics and engineering principles to solve critical societal problems, all while educating new generations of leaders.

Education:

Required
PhD in Nuclear Engineering, Physics, Applied Math, Computer Science or a closely related field.


Qualifications:

The successful candidate will have an excellent academic record, a vision for an innovative, significant and impactful research program, the skills to implement it, and a commitment to high quality and inclusive undergraduate and graduate instruction and mentoring. The candidate's years of experience and professional accomplishments will be commensurate with the rank sought. Associate and Full professor candidates must possess experience and scholarly credentials that meet the tenure standards of the UW-Madison Divisional Committee and of the College of Engineering.

This position is part of the Wisconsin Research, Innovation and Scholarly Excellence (RISE) Initiative. Through accelerated and strategic faculty hiring, research infrastructure enhancement, interdisciplinary collaboration, and increased student and educational opportunities, RISE addresses complex societal challenges of importance to the state, nation and world. Building on UW-Madison's strengths, RISE expands the University's successful track record of connecting with communities and industry on collaborative solutions.

Over the next three academic years, UW-Madison will substantially increase current hiring levels, bringing 150 new RISE faculty to campus. Candidates hired through RISE will join a community of scholars working across disciplines, schools and colleges on research, teaching and outreach endeavors. The community will engage regularly in venues such as seminar series and colloquia to share ongoing projects and identify opportunities to work together. The RISE AI hiring initiative will add 20 new faculty members to this vibrant community in the College of Engineering.
