Principal Mining Engineer

S&ME is looking for a motivated and passionate Principal Mining Engineer to join our Geotechnical team in Lexington, Kentucky. Are you ready to contribute your education and knowledge to meaningful projects? Join us at S&ME!

As a Principal Mining Engineer, you will assume a pivotal role in guiding and propelling our mining projects from inception to completion, driving innovation, and ensuring top-tier quality, safety, and on-time delivery. Your technical expertise in mining, design, and execution will be critical in solving complex challenges. You'll also play a key role in client relations, ensuring project success and profitability. By mentoring your team and managing each project phase, you'll play a key role in improving efficiency, refining processes, and raising departmental standards.

Your Day-to-Day:



  • Technical review: Oversee technical reviews of Company and Area-level work and develop standard engineering procedures.
  • Proposals: Lead proposals involving unusual size or complexity.
  • Marketing: Manage a network of contacts to identify future work, support marketing staff, and present S&ME capabilities to clients.
  • Training: Mentor and train staff in standard procedures and case studies and participate in technical committee activities.
  • Research/technical organizations: Stay updated on new scientific methods, recommend changes, collaborate with professionals, and participate in technical/trade associations.
  • Communication & Leadership: Communicate with subcontractors and clients, assist in training junior staff, contribute to business development, and support internal policies and practices.



What You Bring:



  • A Bachelor's degree in Civil or Geotechnical Engineering, Mining, or a related engineering field
  • A minimum of 15 years of professional experience
  • A Professional Engineer (PE) license
  • Excellent business and technical writing skills, negotiation skills, and computer skills including, Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
  • Excellent project management skills



Working Conditions and Physical Demands:

You are willing and able to perform the physical demands of this position with the use of Company-provided Personal Protective Equipment:



  • Working outdoors in varying weather conditions outside normal business hours, as needed
  • Walking over rough and uneven terrain, maneuvering field equipment safely, such as a loaded wheelbarrow
  • Routinely lifting and carrying 40-50lbs, (field/laboratory samples and equipment)
  • Traveling out-of-town and possibly overnight for assignments as needed
