Position Summary
This position is a highly responsible technical research support position at SREL. The incumbent is responsible for both laboratory and field tasks related to research on biogeochemistry, bioavailability, and bioaccumulation of metals. Specific tasks would include field collection of samples, laboratory processing of samples for chemical analysis, assisting with mesocosm experiments, and routine duties related to the efficient operation of our laboratory facilities.

  • Knowledge of chemistry and possess strong writing and organizational skills.
Physical Demands

  • Lift objects weighing up to 25 pounds, frequently throughout the workday, to a height of 4 feet.
  • Sitting/standing/walking to perform lab/field/office work, including wet chemistry work in the lab, using computers in the office, and collecting samples in the field.

  • Routine laboratory duties for three lab facilities (the main lab, the hood lab, and the fish lab) by purchasing chemicals and supplies and maintaining equipment and instruments.

  • Research duties to assist the research project of metal biogeochemistry in H-02 constructed wetland, including field sampling, sample processing, chemical analysis, and data management.
  • Conduct mercury analysis on water, sediment, and biota samples.

  • Perform laboratory safety duties by providing information as required for all chemical, radiological, equipment, and/or other inventories as requested by SREL safety, property accounting, or similar staff with reporting requirements to DOE and/or UGA.

  • Serves as a good steward for all facilities, equipment, vehicles, and other research infrastructure placed in his/her control on behalf of SREL/UGA/DOE and participates as a subject matter expert and contributing author for preparation of reports, development of research policies, and/or development of research procedures as requested by SREL Management.
  • Assist graduate students and postdocs with ongoing research.
