What your job will be like:

Are you looking to join a strong committed team of scientist? If so, consider Jefferson Lab's Data Acquisition Group. As a Data Acquisition Scientist, you will be responsible for providing support for the design, development, implementation and operation of data acquisition systems for all nuclear physics experiments at the laboratory. The focus of this position is the design of custom high speed circuits, coding of firmware, and software that will interface with other data acquisition systems. Firmware is developed with VHDL or other is specific FPGA tools plus embedded processors in the data acquisition systems. This includes trigger systems and front end digitization hardware. The position duties also include support for the operation of data acquisition systems in the experimental Halls, hardware test stations throughout the laboratory and at collaboration institutions.

In this role you will:



  • Working with staff from nuclear physics experiments to gather requirements for front-end data acquisition software and hardware required to support acquisition of data from experiments
  • Complete conversion of the requirements into a design, documenting the design and presenting the design for review by the experimenters, members of the data acquisition and fast electronics groups
  • Drive implementation of the design in both hardware and software, while working with other staff to develop data acquisition systems
  • Assist with the debugged of the hardware, firmware and supporting software as well as deployment and commissioning of the completed and debugged systems
  • Providing on-site assistance in debugging and maintenance of deployed systems.
  • Lead assigned projects from requirements gathering to final deployment either individually or as the leader of a team
  • The incumbent must be prepared to take the lead in taking the assigned projects from requirements gathering to final deployment either individually or as the leader of a team.


Qualifications we require:

Education



  • Ph.D. Physics


Experience



  • 5 or more years prior experience of designing trigger and/or data acquisition custom systems for Nuclear Physics experiments


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities



  • Working knowledge in the techniques for for high speed analog and digital circuit design, coding and debugging of front end-end data acquisition hardware and software to include firmware design techniques using VHDL or other High Level Synthesis tools for Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGA) This includes skills in C and C++, and experience with programming in Linux and VxWorks environments
  • Experience in designing and coding of data acquisition custom software for Nuclear Physics experiments
  • Ability to communicate ideas both to peers and to experimenters who are the "customers" for the software.
