Overview

Orrick currently has an excellent opportunity for a Payroll Manger. This position could be based in any of our U.S. offices (Austin; Chicago; Boston; Houston; Los Angeles; New York; Menlo Park; Orange County; Portland; Sacramento; San Francisco; Santa Monica; Seattle; Washington DC; or Wheeling, WV) and consideration given for 100% remote US locations.



Responsibilities

The Payroll Manager should be well-versed in the UltiPro, Kronos or similar payroll platform(s) to manage and oversee our domestic and international payroll operations. The Payroll Manager will be responsible for ensuring accurate and timely payroll processing, compliance with all relevant federal, state and local laws and regulations, and the continuous improvement of payroll procedures. This role requires strong leadership, organizational, and technical skills, along with a deep understanding of payroll processes and the cloud-based payroll platform(s).

    Manage and supervise the payroll team, ensuring that all payroll-related tasks are completed accurately and on time.
  • Maintain and optimize the payroll platform to meet the organization's specific payroll needs, staying up to date with system updates and best practices.
  • Ensure all payroll transactions, including deductions, overtime, and bonuses, are processed accurately.
  • Monitor and resolve payroll discrepancies by conducting regular audits and implementing effective controls.
  • Stay informed about changes in tax laws and labor regulations and ensure compliance with these changes in payroll processing.
  • Collaborate with the HRIS department to ensure proper integration between HRIS and payroll systems.
  • Generate and review various payroll reports, reconciliations, and payments, and address any discrepancies.
  • Develop and maintain payroll policies and procedures to enhance efficiency and internal controls.
  • Provide training and support to team members on the use of the UKG platform and related payroll software.
  • Assist with year-end reporting and preparation of annual tax forms.
  • Stay updated on industry trends, best practices, and technology advancements in the payroll field.
  • Develop and maintain policies and procedures to improve and streamline the payroll accounting processes globally.
  • Manage the firm's compliance with IRS, FLSA, workers compensation, state, local, and agency regulations and reporting requirements.
  • Manage the relationship with outside vendors.
  • Manage the daily operation of all payroll related information including the input of timesheets, employee tax data and direct deposit information by payroll staff.
  • Oversee the preparation, documentation, and the dissemination of payroll checks, and related payroll tax deposits.
  • Oversee the annual payroll calendar to ensure the timely processing of payroll, including input of overtime, printing of checks, calculation of federal and state payroll taxes, bank files and garnishments.
  • Oversee the review and approval of all payroll journal entries, wires and check requests.
  • Oversee the monthly FTE process and make changes as necessary.
  • Perform miscellaneous other projects as assigned.


Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance or equivalent work experience required.
  • 7+ years of experience as a Payroll Manager or similar role, with a strong background in using UltiPro, Kronos, or similar cloud-based payroll platform.
  • Strong knowledge of multi-state payroll and payroll taxes; international payroll experience preferred.
  • Proficient in Excel/MS Word and Windows environment required.
  • Excellent communication and leadership abilities.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills required.
  • Basic accounting skills required.
  • Attention to detail and a high level of accuracy.
  • A solid understanding of labor laws and payroll compliance.
  • Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) or other relevant certifications is a plus.

Compensation and Benefits

The expected salary range for this position:

  • California Major Markets* $98,000.00 - $134,000.00
  • New York City $113,000 - $134,000.00
  • National $88,000.00 - $113,000.00

* California Major Markets includes San Francisco, Silicon Valley, Los Angeles, Orange County, Santa Monica. All other California locations fall within National range.

Orrick is committed to providing a comprehensive, competitive, and thoughtful total compensation package to our attorneys and staff, wherever they work. This compensation and benefits information is based on the Orrick's estimate as of the date of publication and may be modified in the future. The level of pay within the range will depend on a variety of job-related factors that may include, but not limited to, qualifications, relevant experience or education, particular skills or expertise, geography. Other compensation may include an annual discretionary merit bonus, which would be determined by Firm and individual performance.
