Job Summary

Involves the provision of integrated and accessible primary and specialty patient care services in a clinic or center environment. Care is provided by clinicians and assistants whoa re accountable for addressing a large majority of personal health care needs and developing a sustainable partnership with patients. Ensure optimal patient outcomes through effective leadership and/or provision of patient care delivery in healthcare clinics or centers. Promotes shared decision-making at all levels to ensure a shared voice in practices, exchanges of ideas, enhanced communication, and continually improved patient services. Management levels may also be responsible for clinic operations. (Note, when primary focus is clinical operations, see Ambulatory Administration job function.)

The incumbent will manage the delivery of ambulatory patient care, including nursing and clinical support staff for the following locations: 185 Berry (China Basin Waterfront), 515 Spruce (Phototherapy and Sensory), 1600 Divisadero & 1855 4th Street (Melanoma). He/she will also facilitate the flow of patient care activities and oversee the Dermatology clinical call center. Cross coverage at other locations may be required.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $130,800 - $274,600 (Annual Rate).

Department Description

The Dermatology practices at UCSF Health are regional centers offering a broad spectrum of diagnostic and treatment services for patients of all ages with cutaneous problems. We provide the most comprehensive skin cancer treatment program in northern California, we are the region's only vascular anomalies center, and we provide a complete psoriasis treatment program.

The Dermatology Clinic offers a wide range of treatments for patients across the age continuum with skin problems, including but not limited to the following conditions: acne, autoimmune, connective tissue disease, HIV-related skin disorders, mole, atypical nevus, melanoma surveillance, disorders of cornification, pigmented disorders, environmental dermatitis, rosacea, hair, and nail disorders, and human papillomavirous (HPV). The procedures performed in the Dermatology clinics include biopsies, excisions, mohs surgery, and cosmetic procedures.

The UCSF Health Dermatology team is composed of one administrative director, three administrative supervisors, one revenue manager, three nurse managers, and one clinical lab supervisor. Managers and supervisors provide cross-coverage for each other when one is out of the office. There is an expectation that the nurse manager will foster a collegial environment in which there is sharing of expertise and best practices with colleagues. Additionally, the nurse manager should be flexible and accept reassignments and additional duties, when necessary, in a positive manner.

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor of degree in nursing or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to create and maintain a climate for effective communication and collaborative decision making. Able to convey information with authority, handle highly sensitive matters, and interact with high level contacts from other departments/organizations.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills and ability to explain technical specialty concepts thoroughly.
  • Strong leadership, fiscal, and operations management skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with physicians, management, and staff from all disciplines. Ability to create and maintain a goal-oriented climate of teamwork, collaboration, and consistent achievement of objectives.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills, with the ability to quickly analyze problems, determine the appropriate level of intervention, and develop and apply effective solutions.
  • Highly developed personal organizational skills. Proven ability to organize staff and tasks, manage multiple priorities/projects through completion and on schedule, oversee multiple locations, and delegate work functions in an efficient and effective manner in a complex and challenging environment. Flexibility to adjust to constantly changing priorities.
  • Strong knowledge of human resources management policies, with the ability to train, monitor, evaluate, and document human resources issues and performance.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of relevant regulatory requirements, as well as related legislative, accreditation, licensing, and compliance environments.
  • Maintains current knowledge of nursing practices, dermatologic advancements, new methodologies, relevant industry/regulatory compliance, accreditation requirements, medical center health and safety guidelines, and advances in the field of specimen processing, automation, and procedures.
  • Strong knowledge of quality assurance methods and ability to apply principles to design quality systems.
  • Ability to use laboratory applications/clinical software/databases/dashboards. Skills to perform data checks using queries, visual review, and other appropriate means to verify data accuracy.

Preferred Qualifications


  • At least 5 years of clinical experience in nursing with 2 of those years in a dermatology setting.
  • Minimum of 2 years of nursing supervisory experience in an outpatient clinic familiar with Dermatology diseases.
  • Experience in large academic medical setting and ambulatory care.
  • Experience using EMR-EPIC/APeX.
  • Master's degree in nursing or equivalent combination of experience/training.
  • Ambulatory Certified RN, or Certification in specialty area
  • Nursing Professional Development Certification

License/Certification


  • Registered Nurse in the State of California.
  • Bachelor of degree in nursing or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Current American Heart Association CPR Certification (BLS)
