Join the Facilities Division at North Carolina State University as a dedicated member of our Landscape Maintenance and Operations department. As a Field Arborist, you will specialize in tree care and the proactive maintenance of campus trees. You will apply expert arboricultural practices to safely remove trees and limbs without causing damage to surrounding structures or property. This role involves assessing trees to determine the best course of action based on their size, condition, and the surrounding landscape, while also accounting for any obstacles such as power lines or structures. If you have experience in arboriculture, strong tree care skills, and a dedication to maintaining the urban forest, this role offers the opportunity to make a meaningful impact on the campus landscape.
Key responsibilities and duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Work collaboratively within a team to prune and, when necessary, remove trees and limbs across the campus. Perform proper pruning techniques to improve the overall structure and composition of the tree canopy. Identify and remove dead, dying, or diseased limbs to maintain tree health.
  • Identify potential hazards, such as power lines, and take necessary steps to ensure safety during tree maintenance and removal.
  • Operate various equipment related to tree work, including brush chippers, stump grinders, bucket trucks, dump trucks, grapple trucks, skid steers, chainsaws, pole saws, and rigging tools like ropes and lowering devices.
  • Perform tasks both aloft (in aerial lifts or climbing) and from the ground, including running ropes, saws, and lowering devices. Assist with debris cleanup, hauling, stump grinding, and brush chipping.
  • Conduct pre-trip vehicle and equipment inspections, ensure proper care and custody of tools, and perform basic corrective repairs. Maintain tools by sharpening chainsaws, cleaning air filters, checking fluid levels, lubricating components, and inspecting rigging equipment.
  • Set up work zone traffic control measures, including barricades, cones, and signs. Safely flag and manage traffic for stationary and moving work zones.
  • Safely load, haul, deliver, and offload equipment, trees, tree debris, wood chips, soil, and other materials.
  • This position is critical in ensuring the safety and maintenance of NCSU's tree assets, requiring physical endurance and a commitment to safety.

Other Responsibilities
  • Position serves in a critical role and is essential to the operations of the University. May be required to work during adverse weather conditions and work even if the University closes. Aid in snow removal as directed by supervisors.
