Minimum Qualifications
Requires technical knowledge in the field acquired through an apprenticeship, formal training programs, or on-the-job training. Please contact your Human Resources office for an evaluation of education/experience in lieu of the required minimum qualifications.
Preferred Qualifications

  • 6-8 years' experience supervising civil related construction and maintenance projects
  • Knowledge of advanced civil construction practices/techniques
  • Valid Driver's License

Position Summary
This is skilled supervisory work in the construction and maintenance of university campus streets, driveways, parking lots, and storm sewers. This position will supervise and oversee the installation of curbs, sidewalks, retaining walls and other concrete structures. This individual may supervise the installation of underground utilities and/or construction and major repair of streets, driveways, parking lots, storm sewers, and appurtenances, open ditch and tile land drainage systems and land leveling. Supervision is exercised over a crew of skilled and unskilled workers or two or more small crews assigned to individual projects throughout the campus. Work is performed under general direction of an administrative superior and is subject to periodic review by superiors for results obtained, changes in work methods, and adherence to departmental policies. This position will preform administrative tasks such as work orders and daily work schedules. This position will on occasion require interface with campus departments impacted by our work. Additionally, the position will require monitoring equipment to ensure safe operation. This position will provide on-the-job training to others in the department and administer safety talks.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies

  • Strong Concrete Background
  • Knowledge of advanced civil construction practices/techniques including but not limited to concrete forming/placement, grading, drainage, utility installation, retaining wall construction and site layout.
  • Knowledge of the operation of heavy construction equipment including but not limited to skid steers, backhoes, excavators, dozers, dump trucks and other equipment used in civil related construction projects.
  • Knowledge of asphalt pavement construction and maintenance, concrete placement and finishing, fundamentals of stormwater management including best management practices (BMPS's)
  • Knowledge of safety procedures related to civil construction practices and techniques.
  • Knowledge and experience in the use of computer software programs including Microsoft Outlook suite and Adobe PDF.
  • Knowledge of time keeping and work order management systems.
  • Knowledge of CDL rules and regulations
  • Ability to read, interpret, and use civil engineering/landscape architectural plans.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective work relationships.
  • Ability to plan, coordinate, and supervise the work of others.
  • Ability to communicate well both verbally and in writing.

  • Office/physical labor 8 hours a day/5 days a week.
  • Lift up to 75lbs.
  • Work often under adverse weather climatic conditions (cold, heat, rain, snow).

  • Routinely monitor, evaluate and direct multiple base crews in the construction and maintenance of university streets, driveways, parking lots, and utilities.
  • Supervise concrete finishers in the installation of curbs, sidewalks and retaining walls.
  • Inspect concrete and base crews to assure proper grades and elevations are met.
  • Respond to work orders and adapt to the ever-changing needs of the organization.
  • Create daily work schedules.
  • Ensure appropriate PPE is provided and used properly.
