Senior Scientist in Biochemistry & Molecular Genetics

The Egelman lab at the University of Virginia, Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Genetics has an opening for a Senior Scientist. The research is focused on the structure and function of macromolecular assemblies, using the techniques of electron cryo-microscopy and three-dimensional reconstruction. Historically, we have been working in two different areas: protein-DNA complexes and F-actin. However, the development of new techniques by us for working with helical polymers has expanded our interest to many other systems, from bacterial pili to the filaments formed on foreign RNA and DNA in the cell as part of the innate immune response. We are now at the point where we can achieve near-atomic resolution almost routinely for many filamentous biological assemblies!

Senior Scientists are expected to have sufficient experience and background to organize small research groups. Senior Scientists are expected to perform assigned tasks on their own initiative with minimal direction.

The successful candidate will:

• Organize small research groups

• Perform assigned tasks on their own initiative with minimal direction

• In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.

• Assist Undergraduate Students, Graduate Students, Lab Staff and Volunteers as well as Junior Research Staff with documentation and experiments.

• Present findings in lab meetings, and possibly at scientific meetings or conferences

• Keep accurate records and work with PI to discuss findings and further experiments.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education: Doctoral degree
Experience: None
Licensure: None

Candidates should have a Ph.D. with several years of postdoctoral experience in structural biology using cryo-electron microscopy. A demonstrated track record involving publications in this area is necessary. Prior experience using both a Titan Krios and a Glacios is needed, as well as experience using cryoSPARC and Relion for image analysis and processing. Familiarity with building and refining atomic models, using programs such as Phenix, is also essential. Since many projects will involve helical polymers, expertise in determining and working with helical symmetry is required.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs
